The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry, and two films explore that abiding Robert Burns proverb this week: Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s IMAX-sized three-hour biopic of the “father of the atomic bomb,” and Barbie, a Mattel-sanctioned deconstruction of the patriarchy from the fertile mind of Greta Gerwig. Only one of these summer blockbusters, however, boasts a number of sex scenes, and it isn’t the one starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Spoken English evolved such useful phrases as “blah blah blah” and “yada yada yada” so that in conversation we don’t have to suffer through numbingly repetitive descriptions of the perfectly obvious. Sadly, no such shorthand exists in the “After” universe, which, now on its fourth instalment, seems dedicated to spinning the already vanishingly wispy romance between good-girl Tessa and bad-boy Hardin, YA fiction’s most colossally boring golden couple, into ever thinner straw. After a placeholder second film (“After We Collided”) and a wheel-spinning third (“After We Fell”), the new episode — which itself ramps up to a face-palming “to be continued” — can’t even charitably be said to be blah. It’s the space between the blahs.
Laboring under the aggravatingly agrammatical title of “After Ever Happy” (hats off if you get the order of those three words right on your first attempt), this desultory go-round picks up at...

It would be unfair to blame Harry Styles for “After We Collided,” the sequel to 2019’s “After,” just because both films are based on a series of novels that evolved from One Direction fan-fiction. But he should maybe lie low for a bit because by the time the end credits roll like a potential warrant list, we are looking for someone — anyone — to blame.
“This is a story you’ve heard before,” drones the toneless opening voiceover, but thing is, we really haven’t, because this is not a story. It is a numbingly repetitive series of manufactured minor dramas between the two terminally self-involved, staggeringly uninteresting protagonists of the first film, which set the bar so low it has to be the result of special effort that the sequel fails to clear it. “After” was merely awful. “After We Collided” is atrocious. Naturally, it’s proving an enormous pandemic-era hit.

This week's Grimm is a Renard family affair. Here's Christine's review of a twist-filled episode...
This review contain spoilers.
4.2 Octopus Head
This week’s episode picks up where we left it last week, with doctors seemingly unable to revive Sean Renard after his apparently fatal shooting by Steward. But this is Grimm, and where conventional human medicine fails, Hexenbiest magic can work wonders.
Enter the mysterious woman seen briefly last episode who, freeze-framing the doctors working on Renard, administers a powerful spell with a two-headed snake that appears to transfer her own life force into Renard’s body, jump-starting the Captain back to consciousness.
Which is how we’re introduced to Elizabeth Lascelles, Renard’s mother.
The first question that’s springs to mind is, ‘How on earth can they get away with casting Louise Lombard – who is a full three years older than Sasha Roiz – as Renard’s mother?...

Lifetime’s new drama pilot The Lottery has added Young and the Restless fave Michael Graziadei, CSI alumna Louise Lombard and Spartacus‘ Lesley-Ann Brandt.

Yet another new castmember has been added to The CW's second pilot effort at adapting Kiera Cass' The Selection, and this time the character cast doesn't stem directly from the book version of the story. Per Deadline, English actor Ben Aldridge will portray Prince Rafe, the younger prince of Illea who "loves his country and takes his leadership role seriously — but he does have a secret." As detailed by Spoiler TV, the second piloting script for The Selection adds more focus on the affairs of the palace, which is being attacked by sometimes dangerous revolutionaries on a regular basis, and this means the addition of characters like Rafe ... and more drama, like the fact that Rafe has a little tryst on the side with one of the competitors for his brother's heart. 'The Selection' book trailer Aldridge joins Yael Grobglas (America Singer), Lucien Laviscount (Aspen Leger), Michael Malarkey...

Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas is back at the CW with Metropolis, a drama based on the 2000 British series. Thomas will write and executive produce the project, about a group of friends who are struggling with their adult lives not living up to the expectations they had when they were idealistic college friends. The original limited series, created by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) and produced by Granada TV, had an eight-episode run with a cast that included James Fox, Louise Lombard, James Purefoy and Matthew Rhys. The adaptation is being produced by Warner Bros TV, Rob Thomas Prods, ITV Studios America (formerly Granada America) and Littlefield Co, with Warren Littlefield and ITV’s Paul Buccieri executive producing. This is Thomas’ second stab at adapting Metropolis. The previous one was at ABC during the 1999-2000 development season when the project went to pilot starring Michael Ealy, with the CW...

I do love the episode when they bring back my favorite bad guys. And Bret Stiles (Malcolm McDowell) has been away from this show for far too long. I also love that no one is safe from Stiles' creepy brand of cold-reading and insight, I just wish he'd had more time to call Lisbon on her failings a little more thoroughly. Anti-cult activist Gabriel Meadows is dead and his laptop is missing. And before Lisbon (Robin Tunney) can hardly get a look at the crime scene, Jane (Simon Baker) is rooting out a spy in their ranks. Meadows was investigating Visualize, the cult lead by our manipulatively wonderful Bret Stiles while trying to get his sister out. But someone has tampered with the crime scene and one of the uniform cops turns out to be a Visualize minion. Of course, Stiles shows up at Cbi to be helpful and get...

Could Bret Stiles be Red John? Or just one giant red herring? "His Thoughts Were Red Thoughts" had Patrick Jane and his favorite cult leader circling one another yet again and what fun it was.
Stiles and Jane took shots at one another like a couple of prize fighters. Stiles certainly made it his business to know a lot about Patrick Jane. He knew that Jane had used Red John to take down the San Joaquin killer. He knew Rosalind was under protective custody with the FBI and, of course, he knew that Jane had shot a man he had claimed was Red John.
Stiles poked and prodded at Jane mercilessly, even comparing him to the Sorcerer's Apprentice who had woken up a power he could not control. On that count he might just be right.
He even took a shot at Lisbon and tried to turn her against Jane.

Nick (George Eads) and Ray (Laurence Fishburne) searching for a Cs at the beginning, was almost indicative of Ray's search for Haskell (Bill Irwin). Who else would leave DBs in his wake. Nick comments on there being lots of manure here and Ray can smell it, can't help wondering if that was a snide remark about the B.S churned out by Haskell in this episode. No one was really on the ball, I have to say as far as Haskell was concerned. Rray nearly drives into a, "holy cow" as Nick says. Hey Nick should know all about cows from the question Gil (William Petersen) asked him: "What do cows drink?" All those seasons ago. They comes across scattered Db parts in a barn. Ray was oblivious he was stepping in manure. Nick Ids the larvae, as is his new specialty now, so they were dead up to 96+ hours ago.

I'm beginning to have a love/hate relationship with this Nate Haskell storyline. One the one hand I'm excited to see the mayhem leading up to the season finale. On the other I'm sort of tired of it and see where everything is leading.
"Father of the Bride" earns kudos for an engaging but predictable plot, but a lot of what made me enjoy this episode were the guest stars and the solid character interaction.
Ray is going to snap very soon. If the end of the episode is leading where I think it is, he'll probably snap within minutes of next week's opening credits.
Lawrence Fishburne is doing an excellent job of showing the slow progression of a man on the verge of crossing all his lines. In every scene Ray's agitation and growing inner darkness seeps into the foreground.
Even in a humorous moment when Henry mentions that...

The return of Nate Haskell to CSI this spring will bring along with it another familiar face: former series regular Louise Lombard.
TV Line confirms that the actress will reprise the role of Sofia Curtis, who has not appeared since season eight, on one episode in May.
“Sofia’s a deputy chief now,” executive producer Carol Mendelsohn says. “She’s gotten her shield and she has a real ‘take no prisoners’ attitude."
What brings Curtis back into the picture? Haskell, of course. Says Mendelsohn:
“Langston becomes involved because Sofia wants to call in the feds, since they’ve now had Haskell sightings in Mexico and all over, which means he’s clearly not in Vegas. Of course, Langston begs to differ. The episode is really about where is Nate Haskell.”
