On January 18, 2004, Showtime made history with “The L Word”: a spaghetti-strapped melodrama about twiggy lesbians living against a golden-filtered backdrop of mid-aughts Los Angeles.
The stroke of entertainment genius from creator/executive producer Ilene Chaiken premiered that Sunday night in two parts, introducing a revolutionary cast of LGBTQ characters who would change the face and ritual of lesbian pop culture forever. From the moment Jenny (Mia Kirshner) laid eyes on Marina (Karina Lombard)…even before Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman) tried to steal that dude’s sperm…or Shane (Katherine Moennig) showed up wearing that leather vest….countless TV-loving shes, theys, and gays saw themselves reflected in a fizzy fictional universe that was finally, mercifully grounded in a semi-authentic lesbian reality.
Fast forward to 2019; the reboot happened. Showtime’s “The L Word: Generation Q” served as both a revamp of the initial concept with new characters and...

The remarkable thing about Brad Pitt, who turns 60 on December 18, isn’t the 85 and counting IMDb acting credits under his belt, although that’s a pretty impressive number.

A historic drama about the descendants of two brothers from Egypt battling for control in North America, sounds like the premise of an imaginative action film. But The Oath is not really an action film – its only action sequence comes very late in the film – but a romance/heroic drama based in Mormon (more properly the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) belief, by writer/director/star Darin Scott. Scott stars in and directs The Oath, and co-wrote the script with Michelle Scott. The Oath joins a long cinematic tradition of religious movies, a genre that has existed since the beginning of movies and includes films like Ben Hur. Like all cinematic retelling of religious stories, the greatest appeal is for members of that particular faith but The Oath seems like it might be aimed to a more general audience,...

Better late than never. After the traditional Cannes Film Festival was cancelled last year due to Covid, the glitzy event is back with Covid protocols in order. Instead of taking place in May, the 74th annual gala opened on July 6 and will continue through July 17th at the glamorous French resort town.
Spike Lee, who was supposed to be jury head last year, was asked to take up the reigns of this edition. And he appeared on the legendary red carpet decked out in a striking pink ensemble. The festival opened with the Leos Carax’ offbeat musical “Annette” featuring music by the Sparks Brother and Val Kilmer’s self-titled documentary “Val,” which earned kudos and a long-standing ovation. Other films premiering at the festival including Sean Penn’s “Flag Day,” Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” Asghar Farhadi’s “The Hero” and Francois Ozon’s “Everything Went Fine.”

After more than two years in development, a reboot of The 4400 TV series has been ordered by The CW. The network gave the remake a straight-to-series order, meaning that a pilot has not been produced.
Airing on USA Network from July 2004 until September 2007, The 4400 series stars Joel Gretsch, Jacqueline McKenzie, Mahershala Ali, Laura Allen, Patrick Flueger, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Chad Faust, Kaj-Erik Eriksen, Samantha Ferris, Jenni Baird, Brooke Nevin, Conchita Campbell, Karina Lombard, Billy Campbell, and Peter Coyote. The story begins as a mysterious ball of light deposits a group of exactly 4,400 people near Mount Rainer in Washington state. These people had all previously disappeared in a beam of light, starting as far back as 1946. None of them have aged since their disappearances nor do they have any memory of where they've been.

When Syfy announced its new original series Defiance, our homo-happy ears perked right up. For starters, seventy hundred gazillion queer women have suddenly found themselves knee-deep in sci-fi love thanks to the gateway drug called Lost Girl. But also, Defiance scored quite a few lesbian loyalty points by casting the gay-for-pay trifecta of Jaime Murray, Julie Benz, and Mia Kirshner. Or, to put it another way:
That's Gai from Spartacus getting ready to do it with Lucy Lawless; Robin Gallagher from Desperate Housewives getting ready to do it with Dana Delany; and Jenny Schecter from The L Word getting ready to do it with Karina Lombard. (Plus, not pictured: Helena G. Wells.)
But what about Defiance? Is it worth your time? Well, that all depends on whether or not you've ever asked yourself what would happen if Shakespeare, Ron Moore, and E.L. Doctorow sat down...

It's no secret that Smash has been NBC's biggest migraine of the last two years. During the off-season, they fired the creator, axed a whole bunch of hated characters, brought on the showrunner from Gossip Girl, hired the ever fabulous Jennifer Hudson, and basically just rewired the whole shebang. The show is unapologetically gay as a window — progressively gay for broadcast network TV, even — and yet we haven't seen a single lesbian. A huge cast on a show set in Manhattan. Come on, now. Be for real, Smash.

Nashville has turned out to be this season's slow-burner, but the lady-centric drama gets better and better every week. Callie Khouri, the show's creator, is also the writer of a little film called Thelma & Louise, so we know she knows the power of the female bond.

NCIS definitely knows how to raise the stakes with international missions, inter-agency subterfuge and kidnapped military personnel. Far from a run-of-the-mill murder case, tonight's investigation was just the onset of an intriguing new arc that could continue through next month's season finale, if not beyond.
The conclusion of "The Missionary Position" unfolded very quickly and felt anticlimactic after a compelling, slow-building first 45 minutes in the U.S. and Colombia, but it was just the opening chapter.
More questions were asked than answered, and none greater than what Dr. Samantha Ryan (Jamie Lee Curtis) knows about the mysterious Monique Lisson (Karina Lombard), whose penchant for secrecy and suspicious background were evident from the start. In that respect, Lisson is a fitting adversary for Ryan.
Following their apparent sleepover at Gibbs' house, were led to believe that Ryan's reappearance could be purely personal, to showcase her new relationship with Gibbs, and not necessarily related to tonight's case.

What will happen between NCIS' Tony and Ziva when they go to South America together next month? Cote de Pablo (Ziva) shares some insight on that very subject in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Cote notes that on one of the last trips Tony and Ziva took - to Paris, in Season 7's "Jet Lag" - the pair gave conflicting reports about the nature of their interactions, keeping viewers guessing as to what took place.
That was exactly their intention, she says.
“The France trip was really great, lots of fun. But Michael [Weatherly] and I had our own agenda. The way we played scenes was that something definitely happened, even though it was never addressed,” she recalls.
On the show's next new episode, airing April 10, the pair takes a trip to Colombia to work a case alongside a longtime friend and mentor of Ziva’s, played by guest star...

As we first talked about last week, a longtime friend and mentor of Ziva’s, played by Karina Lombard (Rescue Me, The L Word), becomes involved in a case being worked on by the team on NCIS.
What's the premise for her arrival next month?
“We established in the [Season 9] opener that she has this friend who she was going to talk to and see,” says executive producer and show-runner Gary Glasberg. “In this episode, we’re actually going to meet this woman, who is a friend of Ziva’s who shares a bit of big sister relationship with her.”
The April episode sends the team to Colombia to investigate the case of a missing Navy chaplain.
“She participates with us and helps us figure it out. Along the way, you get an understanding of the relationship [between Ziva and her friend],” he said, teasing that it plays into a much bigger picture.
All this, Glasberg tells Entertainment Weekly,...

Coté de Pablo is being given the chance to explore her NCIS character’s past with the introduction of an old mentor. During the season premiere, Pablo’s Ziva David alluded to a friend of hers living in Central America and now it seems that friend is making her way stateside. The actress cast to play the part should be well known to anyone who watched the highly lesbian-focused series, The L Word.
According to TVLine, Karina Lombard will guest star in an April episode as the longtime friend and mentor of Ziva’s, Monique Lisson. She’ll give us a nice glimpse at who Ziva used to be, while still playing that mentor role. In a way she’ll function as Ziva’s version of Mike Franks, guiding her into figuring out what she wants from her life professionally. So far it sounds like a pretty run of the mill role,...

Karina Lombard has been cast on NCIS - as Ziva's longtime friend and mentor!
Lombard’s character, named Monique Lisson, was first alluded to in September's Season 9 premiere, "Nature of the Beast," during which Ziva made mention of a female friend she had in Central America.
Ep Gary Glasberg told TV Line that he planned to “introduce Ziva’s [version of Mike] Franks - someone who’s going to sort of guide her a little bit in figuring out what she wants from life, professionally.”
Monique, typically for NCIS, has a secretive past of her own, of course.
NCIS returns with new episodes March 20, but Lombard will appear sometime in April. Her TV and film resume includes The L Word, Rescue Me, CSI, CSI: NY, Legends of the Fall and other projects.

The Firm
2012, USA
NBC Thursday 10Pm
Episode 1.01: “Pilot”
Directed by David Straiton
Written by Lukas Reiter, developed for television by Lukas Reiter, based on the novel The Firm by John Grisham.
With Prime Suspect regretfully cancelled, NBC has decided to fill the Thursday 10Pm slot with The Firm and gave us the two hour pilot on Sunday.
Given that Prime Suspect was my favourite new show and my second favourite show on broadcast TV after The Good Wife, The Firm has perhaps an unfair burden to carry. So, let’s not consider it in relation to other procedurals, let’s consider the show in relation to itself. In other words, what part of this shit sandwich that NBC fed us on Sunday is any good?
Well, the foundation of any sandwich is the bread and The Firm is based on a very strong novel by John Grisham – his most...

Jo translates his Spanish when Hector promises to find whoever killed his nephew. Mac asks him to leave his Cs. The Vic's father was killed twelve years ago in an accident and Hector questions Mac if his relative was killed elsewhere, would he investigate. Mac wouldn't jeopardize the investigation. After last week's so-so episode. CSI: New York stepped back up to a level of storytelling I have come to expect with last night's installment, "Holding Cell."
One of the best things about this week was getting a bit more of Mack. I love the way he firmly plants his feet when dealing with outside investigative forces stepping onto his turf.
His swift action when he sees possible compromising elements, and his handling of Hector Vargas, the visiting CSI from Barcelona, was reflective of all the leadership qualities that make Mack such a brilliant main character.
As soon as he found out that the CSI was related to the victim he kept Hector from being involved in the processing of evidence, but he also showed proper respect and courtesy by keeping Hector in the loop, even after Hector hadn't been completely forthcoming.
Guest star Jsu Garcia's turn as Hector Vargas,...

Ok, I admit it; I absolutely, positively love barbarian movies.
The drama, the action, the ultimate conflict of good vs. evil; and, of course, lots of muscled, sweaty dudes. With long, flowing hair. And loincloths. Oh, yeah. Can’t forget those ever-lovin’ loincloths...
Even so, I ordinarily wouldn’t recommend a typical barbarian movie as a chick flick, per se; simply because I couldn’t imagine ringing up all my best galpals and proposing an evening of Haagen Dazs half pints and a Deathstalker marathon (um, yeah). Yet one "sword and pecs" flick I would grant the exalted ‘chick flick’ label is Kull the Conqueror, starring "Hercules" himself, Kevin Sorbo.
As a huge Hercules fan, I greatly looked forward to the release of this action epic, based on a story by "Conan" creator Robert E. Howard. The film not only met but exceeded my expectations, and in a number of ways.

Question: Maybe I missed it, but when is your last day at EW? And where are you going? —Cynthia
Ausiello: Let me see if I can peel back the thick layer of denial long enough to type this next sentence: My last day at EW is this Friday. As far as where I’m going, click here to have your memory refreshed. Or just join — or, rather, like — my new Facebook page. More specific details about my next steps will be posted there shortly. Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – Denis Leary, Peter Tolan, and Evan Reilly were forced to take a lot of time between “Rescue Me” seasons due to the writer’s strike but they’re back with an amazing 22-episode season planned for FX starting tonight, April 7th, 2009 at 9pm Cst. Seamlessly picking up where we left off, “Rescue Me” continues to entertain and maintain its tricky balance between goofy comedy and deadly serious subjects.
Not much has changed for Tommy Gavin (Leary). He’s still dealing with the ghosts of 9/11, still trying to keep his job on the 62 Truck, still battling alcoholism, still barely keeping his fragile relationships with his family together, and still dealing with crazy ex-girlfriends.

Film review: 'Kull the Conqueror'
A Robert E. Howard-inspired sword-and-sorcery adventure with insufficient gore, memorable humor and cinematic brawn to capture the fancy of moviegoers in a big way, "Kull the Conqueror" is mainly notable for the feature-film launch of Kevin Sorbo, star of Universal Television's "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys."
Alas, the wooden and clean-cut Sorbo is a major reason the weakly realized lead character undermines the overall production. Feeling rushed despite a long gestation period, the Universal Pictures release will not conquer the boxoffice. Originally intended as a third "Conan" film, the current project's advertising oddly makes little mention of Howard and the genre track record of "Kull" producer Raffaella De Laurentiis.
The feature debut of veteran television producer-director John Nicolella ("Miami Vice", "Nash Bridges"), "Kull the Conqueror" is only mildly arousing in the battle scenes, and the special effects are lackluster. The whole enterprise is far removed from the serious, bloody moods of Howard, and it's hard to get used to the heavy-metal guitar on the soundtrack in a milieu that passingly evokes the wide-screen splendor of costume epics of yore (mainly "Spartacus" and "The Vikings").
"Kull" has flashes of the unique mystery and humor of Howard's original character and stories, but starting with a confusing first act, the story line never grabs one and the major set pieces are underwhelming. Credited to writer Charles Edward Pogue ("Dragonheart") but retooled when Sorbo came on board, the overall scenario and dialogue lacks passion and its internal logic is shaky. A lot of story is packed in when it's done, but the pacing is uneven, with Nicolella and the actors not achieving much success in refining the characters beyond initial broad strokes.
Kull of Atlantis (Sorbo) is a hunky ex-slave and ex-pirate in "prehistory" (before even Conan) who quickly becomes king of Valusia, but is opposed by an ancient sorceress whose corpse is revived by the ominously burning "Flame of Acheron" -- a reminder of even darker times -- housed atop a hill near the bustling city-state.
Inheriting a pack of scheming nobles, a harem and other trappings and troubles of power, King Kull is easily snared by the revived Akivasha (Tia Carrere), a 3,000-year-old evil being in the guise of a barbarian queen. A pretty but stubborn slave in his keep, Zareta (Karina Lombard) tries to warn Kull but the big lug is bewitched and dethroned.
Both Litefoot ("The Indian in the Cupboard") as a priest loyal to Kull and Thomas Ian Griffith ("The Rock Hudson Story") -- who once was considered for the lead role -- as Valusia's army commander cut more striking figures than Sorbo. When fugitives Kull and Zareta seek passage to an icy island in a quest to defeat Akivasha, they encounter the amusing Harvey Fierstein as a shifty operator and Kull's fair-weather friend.
In the battle of the actresses, Carrere finds the groove and vamps it up enough to at least distract one from the uninspired production design and costumes. Lombard is either miscast or misdirected, giving off little warmth and generating few sparks with the lead.
