The Paris Summer Olympics gave us dozens of “thrill of victory” scenes, but along with the overjoyed winners were heartbroken athletes whom fate did not smile upon at the critical moment.
Here are some of the worst mishaps that occurred during the 2024 games, from tumbles to stumbles — to pesky bacteria.

We hardly need to explain how Anthony Ammirati failed to clear the horizontal bar since his unfortunate crotch shot was seen around the world… in countless instant replays and memes. His Olympic dreams may have been thwarted, but his Internet fame was forever secured in that moment.

Angered by Team USA’s botched baton handoff Friday at the Paris Olympics in the men’s 4×100-meter relay — the 11th since 1995 resulting in disqualifications or bans — nine-time Olympic gold medal winner Carl Lewis is calling for change.
The U.S. relay team was seeking its first Olympic gold in the event in 24 years. They were disqualified after they flubbed the first exchange, handing off outside the permitted zone.
“It is time to blow up the system,” Lewis posted on X. “This continues to be completely unacceptable. It is clear that Everyone at Usaft [USA Track & Field] is more concerned with relationships than winning. No athlete should step on the track and run another relay until this program is changed from top to bottom.

Serena Williams criticized a luxury hotel in Paris on Monday evening for being “denied access” to the hotel’s rooftop restaurant along with her children. The retired tennis champion, who served as a torch bearer at the opening ceremony of this summer’s Olympics, shared an anecdote about her experience at the Peninsula Paris on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Yikes @peninsulaparis I’ve been denied access to rooftop to eat in a empty restaurant of nicer places … but never with my kids,” Williams wrote. “Always a first.” She added on a hashtag for the Olympics.

Sharon Stone and legendary long jump champion Carl Lewis both voiced support for Kamala Harris in her bid to become U.S. president, on the fringes of a gala at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday evening.
“I’m all in for Kamala Harris,” said Stone. “It’s not only because she’s a woman and because we see clearly in businesses that women leaders are better leaders, and that men who hire women within their companies do better.
“We understand that Kamala Harris was a lawyer, who became a prosecutor, who became an attorney general, who became a senator, who then was a presidential candidate, who gained so much respect in that campaign that she was asked to become vice president of the United States. This is a qualified person. This is not a game show host who looks like a 1975 Vegas act.”

If there’s been a single moment representing the definitive emergence of the world from the Covid-19 pandemic, it was the Olympics Opening Ceremony in Paris. The Olympics needed this after the necessary, but emotionally stifling, lockdowns of the Tokyo and Beijing Games. The world needed this.
A coming-out party for the ages — and easily the best Opening Ceremony for a Summer or Winter Games since Rio’s in 2016, if not earlier — the July 26 ceremony featured several moments of transcendent emergence that will stick with viewers for a long time: There was the first ringing of the bells of Notre Dame since fire almost destroyed the 900-year-old cathedral in April 2019; Rafa Nadal, after all his injuries and still walking with slight hesitation, taking the Olympic torch to a waiting boat on the Seine, where Serena Williams was waiting (along with Carl Lewis and Nadia Comaneci) in what was kind of...

For months before the 2024 Summer Olympics, there had been questions surrounding Paris’ ability to hold such a massive event. The city’s residents had threatened to defecate in the Seine River — the site of the opening ceremony — in protest of its highly polluted waters. As the opening presentation neared, things didn’t exactly get better. Just this morning, France’s high-speed rail trains were a target of arson, and thunderstorms cast clouds over the city. Yet, when the opener finally commenced, audiences were transported through a whimsical and engaging four-hour showcase that presented the best of Paris’ glorious architecture and music while welcoming top athletes from across the globe to the French capital.
The ceremony launched with French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane jogging through the streets, carrying the lighted torch down into the Paris Metro and emerging on the Seine via sailboat in a gorgeous explosion of blue, white and red hovering above the river.

The skies over a soaked Paris remained overcast for Friday’s 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony as the promised trés unique spectacle on the River Seine proved rudderless despite some superstars, a historical mixtape, and a grande balançoire or two.
Despite the theatre on the grandest scale with landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral and the Louvre as the backdrop, the opening ceremony simply wasn’t great TV.
Even with the rain pouring down, things definitely improved once darkness fell over City of Lights more than two hours into NBC’s live coverage. Night unveiled more of the drama of Paris itself, the river, and the performers who came alive as the barge-propelled parade of nation and their 205 delegations came to an end.
In the end as Celine Dion made her much-hyped and pitch-perfect appearance under the Olympic rings on the sparkling Eiffel Tower and past Gold medalist...

The Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics made history on Friday as the first to take place outside of a stadium, with a bevy of performances that included a French-language song from superstar Lady Gaga, a fashion runway show on a bridge and boats filled with global athletes cheering as they sailed down the River Seine.
The floatilla event, known for its pomp and grand displays from the host nation, was beset by a rainy day in Paris, but that didn’t stop spectators from lining up along Paris’ famous river to catch a glimpse of the spectacle.
Starting at the Austerlitz Bridge next to Paris’ Jardin des Plantes, the route followed the course of the Seine, east to west. It circumvents two islands in the center of Paris and then flows under several bridges and gateways in the City of Lights. The boat journey for the delegations finishes at the Iena Bridge,...

As far as televised national anthems are concerned, we’ve certainly seen a wide range of performances over the past few decades, haven’t we? From Whitney Houston’s triumphant rendition at the 1991 Super Bowl to Roseanne Barr’s bastardization of the gift of sound at a 1990 Padres game, it’s easy to feel like we’ve heard it all at this point.
But every once in a while, if we’re lucky, a performance comes along that catches us by surprise, sweeps us off our feet and and restores our sense of wonder — a rendition so bold, so unexpected,...

Alysson Felix won her 11th Olympic medal today as part of the US women’s 4×400 relay team. That surpasses the previous record held by track legend Carl Lewis, making Felix the all-time leader in Olympic track and field medals.
The US women’s 4×400 meter relay team blew out its closest competition, Poland, by more than three and a half seconds.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer.”)
“The Masked Singer” moved on from its first crop of Season 3 contestants with its Wednesday episode, which introduced viewers to six more of the third season’s 18 competitors: Banana, Elephant, Kitty, Taco, Mouse and Frog.
Those masked singers are part of Group B, a lineup that will compete over the next two weeks until it’s been whittled down to three contestants — just as Group A was condensed to White Tiger, Turtle and Kangaroo over Season 3’s first three episodes — who will then move on to the finals. And the same will then happen with Group C.
Well, we already know at least one contestant who won’t be moving on: Elephant, who was the first Group B contestant eliminated and revealed to be skateboard legend Tony Hawk on last night’s episode. (You can read TheWrap’s interview...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 3, episode 4 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Feb. 19 on Fox.
That’s a wipe out for Tony Hawk. The skateboarding legend became the first celebrity in “Group B” to be unmasked on Season 3 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired on Wednesday night.
Hawk, who was disguised as the Elephant, performed The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love,” and the judges said he shredded. But it wasn’t enough to survive elimination.
“Coming from a non-singing background, I’ll give myself a ‘B,'” Hawk told Variety. “I think that I felt like I was in tune for the most part, and I remembered the lyrics, which is a frightening prospect. It’s very easy to mix up verses. I went with it the way I sing it in the car.”
None of the “Masked Singer” panel guessed Hawk,...

Stardom Boosts Brand's Sex Appeal
Becoming a movie star has given single British comedian Russell Brand's sex life a huge boost.
Since shooting to international fame in new movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Brand has been inundated with offers from admiring females.
Brand - who counts Kate Moss and Kimberly Stewart among his exes - says, "The best thing about (being a celebrity) is that you meet a lot of people very quickly and have a lot of orgasms. But promiscuity is beneficial in some respects because you recognise that everyone is beautiful and it's good to have sexual encounters."
And Brand is convinced people shouldn't criticise him for his active sex life - as his bedrooms skills are his number one talent.
He says, "Some people say, 'Oh, do you only want to have sex?' What do you mean only?
"I'm bloody good at it and it's better than talking. I'm better at sex than talking so that is one of the best things you can do with me.
"You wouldn't say to (Olympic sprinter) Carl Lewis, 'What? Are we only going to do running?' The best thing is the thing he's best at."...
