Drama Deal
Fremantle has closed a package deal with Spanish streamer Filmin for a slate of premium drama titles, including Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of Ingmar Berman’s “Faithless” and BAFTA-winning actress Rebecca Hall’s thriller “The Listeners,” both of which recently screened in competition at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Also included in the deal are Victor Levin’s Golden Globe-nominated “Alice & Jack,” starring Domhnall Gleeson and Adrea Riseborough; Series Mania best script winner “Herrhausen – The Banker and the Bomb”; and Series Mania audience award winner “Little Bird.”
“We’re deeply honored to add such high-quality titles to our eclectic catalog, which blends A-list actors and directors with independent productions of great merit,” said Filmin Head of Content and Editorial Director Jaume Ripoll. “Spanish audiences will be captivated by what’s coming next; these are all destined for success.”

Mike O’Malley’s Extended Family is no longer.
The comedy has been canceled by NBC after one season. It comes after the network handed third seasons to Night Court and Lopez vs. Lopez and gave Happy’s Place, the comedy starring Reba McEntire, a series order.
Extended Family follows Jim, played by Jon Cryer, and Julia, played by Abigail Spencer, who, after an amicable divorce, continue to raise their kids at the family home while taking turns on who gets to stay with them. Navigating the waters of divorce and child-sharing gets more complicated for Jim when the owner of his favorite sports teams (Donald Faison) enters the picture and wins Julia’s heart.
Its first season ended in March after 13 episodes.

Creator Victor Levin and star Andrea Riseborough discussed their Masterpiece on PBS miniseries Alice & Jack at Deadline Contenders TV on Saturday. Riseborough plays Alice and Domhnall Gleeson plays Jack in the six-episode show that follows their relationship over 16 years. Riseborough said she often is frustrated that most conventional love stories worry about making the characters likable and perfectly moral.
“I know when I’m in love, I’m a total idiot and have no ability to behave even remotely like a normal human,” she said. “Everyone deserves to be a protagonist in their own love story.”
Riseborough acknowledged that Alice tends to close herself off to Jack’s love.
“I think we do that,” she said. “If you have the courage, you can courageously, truly love someone, you often protect them from yourself in certain ways. She has quite a lot of damage. In the most loving way, although the fallout is very painful,...

If you look through some of the boldest, most ambitious works of the past few years, chances are you’ll find Andrea Riseborough on the call sheet.
The English actress has been involved in everything from Alejandro González Iñárritu’s dark comedy “Birdman” and Tom Ford’s neo-noir psychological thriller “Nocturnal Animals” to Panos Cosmatos’ action horror “Mandy” and Will Tracy’s bizarre political dramedy “The Regime.”
All of these memorable performances start with Oscar-nominated Riseborough’s dedication to keeping “an open mind.”
“I have no idea what’s good for me or what I should explore next. But when it’s in front of you, you know it,” Riseborough told TheWrap at the Television Critics Association’s 2024 winter tour. “It’s far better to not to force something into existence, if you know what I mean, because even if it comes to fruition, it lacks authenticity. Jon Cryer is returning to comedy in NBC’s Extended Family alongside Abigail Spencer and Donald Faison.
The peacock network just dropped a first look at the sitcom where the cast talks about their experience working together.
“It’s a throuple but not in the naughty way,” Spencer says in the featurette of the premise of the show.
Spencer also notes that she had “been admiring and watching Jon Cryer’s work for many, many a year and to actually be able to be in the scenes with him is really unbelievable.” Faison echoed Spencer’s sentiment about working opposite the Two and a Half Men alum saying “Is a dream come true.”

NBC, the only broadcast network to have original, homegrown scripted series on the fall schedule with The Irrational and Found, will also launch most of its strike-impacted scripted slate the fastest.
The network has announced its midseason premiere dates, which include mid-January returns for Wolf Entertainment’s three One Chicago and three Law & Order dramas on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
That is a month before dramas on the other major broadcast networks are set to return with new episodes and a couple of weeks before any scripted series elsewhere come back. It is a testament to the well oiled machine that Wolf Entertainment is. As Deadline has reported, the company is capable to start delivering new episodes after as little as two months if starting from scratch with no banked scripts.

“It felt like we were reconnecting after a long time,” To Leslie star Andrea Riseborough said today of working with Domhnall Gleeson on Alice & Jack, Channel 4 & PBS Masterpiece’s upcoming romantic drama that premiered at Mipcom Cannes.
Riseborough and Gleeson have worked plenty together down the years including on Never Let Me Go and Shadow Dancer, but hadn’t partnered on a project for some years until the series.
During an Alice & Jack Q&a this evening at Mipcom Cannes, chaired by Deadline’s Joe Utichi, Riseborough said it “felt like were reconnecting after a long time” and this had been obvious from the first scene that the pair did together.
“It was so catapulted and so real,” she added. “It’s strange to be both young and old with someone but I’ve done that with Domhnall and our relationship kind of reflects Alice and Jack’s meeting.

Andrea Riseborough takes on the pleasure and pain of love in Channel 4 series “Alice & Jack,” created by Victor Levin.
“This frustration of really appreciating someone and also not being able to understand them or be understood, that’s such a common connection we have in life,” she tells Variety ahead of the show’s MipCom premiere. She also serves as an executive producer.
“Also, it’s not just frustration – there is excitement as well. It can take you to your highest highs, it’s the most elated feeling in the world and it’s also brutally hard. There is nothing harder than true love.”
That’s what Alice and Jack (Domhnall Gleeson) are about to find out, as following a supposed one-night stand they realize they can’t be together. They also can’t be apart.

Ah, love. Is there anything it fails to overcome? In reality, the answer is a resounding, “yes, obviously, so many things” — ranging from physical separation and infidelity to your partner’s sudden preoccupation with Aaron Rodgers or their repeated mispronunciation of “picture” as “pitcher.” But if you’re a head-in-the-clouds romantic, nothing so trivial could tear apart two people whose destiny is written in the stars. Logic and practicality don’t apply, the heart wants what it wants, yada yada yada. Love is thee reason for being, and thus it can be a reason to justify almost anything — all sorts of behavior, be it swooning or sordid, can be overlooked in the name of love.

Exclusive: Creatives behind Alice & Jack, which stars Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough in the latter’s first role since the To Leslie controversy, have spotlighted how they wanted the Channel 4/Masterpiece TV series to feel like an indie film.
Speaking before Alice & Jack‘s TIFF premiere, Cannes Grand Prix-winning director Juho Kuosmanen and EP Richard Yee explained that the team behind the show, which is penned by Mad Men’s Victor Levin, virtually all came from the world of independent cinema.
The idea for the series was Levin’s and was a passion project of his for years. He developed it with Michael London (Groundswell Productions). Andrea and Domhnall came on board after the pilot script and last episode were written – it was at this point that they met with Levin to discuss the scripts and help develop the characters during the production.

ITV will not be commissioning a second series of Bend It Like Beckham filmmaker Gurinder Chadha’s lavish period drama Beecham House.
The six-part series, produced by Chadha’s Bend It TV, only managed to pull in an audience of 3.3M in a prestige Sunday night slot. It could not compete with other dramas in the same ITV slot, such as Victoria.
Beecham House will air on PBS in March next year. ITV said Chadha is still hoping to keep the drama going beyond series one through a deal with another international broadcaster.
The drama takes place on the cusp of 19th century in Delhi, following the fortunes of the residents of the titular mansion. It was written by Chadha, Paul Mayeda Berges, Shahrukh Husain and Victor Levin (Mad Men).
The ensemble cast includes Lesley Nicol (Downton Abbey), Gregory Fitoussi, Adil Ray (Citizen Khan), Pallavi Sharda (Lion...

PBS remains committed to co-producing and acquiring British drama despite increased competition from digital rivals including BritBox and Acorn TV.
The public broadcaster has long been the home of scripted series from the other side of the pond but has found itself competing with more rivals in recent years, including Svod platforms and cable networks, which are increasingly co-producing series with UK networks.
But Paula Kerger, President and CEO of PBS, said that it would not back down in pursuit of the best shows from Britain. She highlighted the fact that PBS was free compared to other services.
“Drama is very important to our audience and stations. But remember, we’re free and we’re available to everyone. We feel that drama and our partnership with British drama is important. Yes, it has become more competitive and we’re working much further [ahead]… it is harder to close some of those...

A smart meet-cute can be the making of a rom-com. Something memorable and quirky to endear the future couple to us and to emblazon them on the minds of one another so the will they/won’t they/do they/don’t they panto can begin.
Destination Wedding begins with a peculiar subversion of the trope – a meet-acutely awkward. Frank (Keanu Reeve) and Lindsay (Winona Ryder) form a bond of mutual dislike as they jostle for prime position in a non-existent queue at an airport gate. Quite why their dislike is so strong, and the character assassinations so intense from the outset, is unclear. It sets an unsettling and unrealistic tone which the film sadly never shakes.
Writer/director Victor Levin made the decision to have Lindsay and Frank meet as strangers and yet he appears to have failed to communicate this to his editor and cinematographer. Mat Maddox’s...

Destination Wedding reunites Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder, as the socially awkward Frank and Lindsay. When they meet on their way to a destination wedding, they soon discover they have a lot in common: they both hate the bride, the groom, the wedding, themselves, and most especially each other. As the weekend’s events continually force them together – and their cheerlessness immediately isolates them from the other guests – Frank and Lindsay find that if you verbally spar with someone long enough, anything can happen. When debate gives way to desire, they must decide which is stronger: their hearts or their common sense.

Netflix movies may still be question mark in terms of being allowed in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, but the streaming giant will be present at Cannes Series. The Cannes television festival will mark its second year next month with Netflix going up against rival Amazon in the competition section. The full lineup includes series from Israel, Norway, Spain, and Belgium.
Netflix’s competition entry is the German series “How to Sell Drugs Online Fast,” from writers Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann. Amazon is heading to Cannes Series with “The Feed,” a London-set drama created by Channing Powell and based on the novel Nick Clark Windo. “The Feed” stars “Game of Thrones” favorite Michelle Fairley opposite David Thewlis in a story about a piece of technology that allows people to instantly share thoughts and emotions. The tech falls into the wrong hands and becomes a murderous weapon.

PBS has picked up its latest British drama – Gurinder Chadha’s Beecham House. The India-set series was produced by Bend It TV for ITV and will now air on the PBS Masterpiece block in the U.S.
The six-part series takes place on the cusp of 19th century in Delhi, following the fortunes of the residents of the titular mansion. Written by Chadha, Paul Mayeda Berges, Shahrukh Husain and Victor Levin (Mad Men).
The story begins as handsome and soulful former soldier, John Beecham, has acquired the house to start a new life for his family and a business as a trader. Wealthy and distinguished, John has witnessed profiteering and exploitation during his time with the controlling East India Company and appears haunted by his past. Determined to escape that life, he sets his sights on becoming an honorable member of the region’s trading community.

At one point in what may be the most un-festive comedy ever to revolve around a wedding, Keanu Reeves, playing the groom’s brother, has this to say says about his fellow humans: “We’re all tired, trite, trivial, tiresome, tone-deaf narcissists.” A fair description of the company you’ll be keeping at Destination Wedding.
Writer-director Victor Levin (5 to 7) only gives us two characters in this one-act play disguised as a movie. There’s Reeves as Frank, the walking definition of a mopey misanthrope. And Winona Ryder as Lindsay, who also thinks life sucks.

Victor Levin’s “Destination Wedding,” the third pairing of slacker-era stars Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder, is a romantic comedy with the romance desaturated to a brutalist black. Misanthropes Frank (Reeves) and Lindsay (Ryder) collide en route to the nuptials of a groom both loathe — it’s his estranged brother and her ex-fiancé — and they truly suffer through each of the predictable beats: a cantankerous meet-cute, a string of coincidences, and even a stirring of the loins. Unbuckling his pants to shag in a sun-dappled winery, Reeves groans understandably, “Let’s get it over with.”
“Destination Wedding” is a curio, a film made as much for the inevitable GIFs of Ryder rolling her eyes as for any penetrating insights into the mating behavior of narcissists. Frank is a hard-hearted cynic who steals hotel-room shoehorns and blames his celibacy on his mother’s multiple divorces. Lindsay’s a babbling neurotic who...

There are other characters in Victor Levin’s “Destination Wedding” beyond Frank (Keanu Reeves) and Lindsay (Winona Ryder), but none of them matter or get a moment of screen time beyond filling space in a wide shot. Not the dim bride, or the thoughtless groom, or the cold mother-in-law; the only people who matter are Frank and Lindsay, and so it’s only fitting that when “Destination Wedding” opens, it comes with an amusing subtitle: “A Narcissist Can’t Die Because Then the Entire World Would End.” And, yes, this is a romantic comedy.
Levin’s film, his first since the 2014 Anton Yelchin romantic drama “5 to 7,” will feel familiar to rom-com fans, though the filmmaker lets Reeves and Ryder rip into characters who would be pushed to the side in fluffier films. Most of all, “Destination Wedding” makes the case that the two-hander isn’t dead, even if...

Destination Wedding reunites two of Hollywood’s most adored stars, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder, as the socially awkward Frank and Lindsay.
Did you know this is the 4th film featuring the two actors? They previously featured in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), A Scanner Darkly (2006) and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009).
In their 5th film, when they meet on their way to a destination wedding, they soon discover they have a lot in common: they both hate the bride, the groom, the wedding, themselves, and most especially each other. As the weekend’s events continually force them together – and their cheerlessness immediately isolates them from the other guests – Frank and Lindsay find that if you verbally spar with someone long enough, anything can happen.
When debate gives way to desire, they must decide which is stronger: their hearts or their common sense.

"I don't want to be a person you don't know where to stick." Regatta has released the first official trailer for an upcoming comedy titled Destination Wedding, about two depressed wedding guests who fall for each other while attending a destination wedding in San Luis Obispo, California. Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder star, which is one of the best team-ups in a while, as two miserable and unpleasant wedding guests, Lindsay and Frank, who develop a mutual affection despite themselves. This is the first time Reeves and Ryder have been together in a film since appearing in Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 horror Bram Stoker's Dracula. This looks ridiculously fun, half because it's Reeves & Ryder, and half because it actually looks like one of the funniest wedding comedies since Wedding Crashers and Bridesmaids. You might want to watch. Here's the first official trailer for Victor Levin's Destination Wedding, direct...

No, no, this is not a throwback Thursday post, this is the real deal. Two of the biggest actors from the 90’s, Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves are reuniting to star in a new rom-com called Destination Wedding. The first official trailer has been released and posted below and it’s melting our nostalgic hearts.
Ryder and Reeves in a film together? count me in! The two have co-starred in a couple of movies before. 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula and again in 2006 with A Scanner Darkly. Both of these actors have remained relevant in this ever changing film industry. Reeves has currently been seen in the John Wick films and soon to be in a Bill and Ted 3, while Ryder has been losing her mind in Netflix’s Stranger Things series as Joyce Byers.

For the first time since 1992's Bram Stoker's Dracula, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder have reunited for a new movie called Destination Wedding, and today we have the first trailer to share with you. It looks like quite the charming little romantic comedy.
The film is described by People as a comedy featuring an "unlikely pair of socially awkward wedding guests" and they offer the following synopsis:
Ryder’s Lindsay and Reeves’ Frank arrive at a destination wedding only to discover they’re the guests no one knows where to put, and are therefore stuck together. Though they hate each other at first, the pessimistic duo start to bond throughout the days-long affair.
The movie was written and directed by Victor Levin who had this to say in an interview:

First of all, a necessary suspension of disbelief: that no one would want to date Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. All set? Now it’s time to enjoy the first trailer for “Destination Wedding,” which hinges on that exact premise. In Victor Levin’s upcoming rom-com, Reeves and Ryder star as a pair of finicky guests who meet at a destination wedding in which both of them feel supremely awkward.
Of course, initial friction between the duo, who are forced together by virtue of their awkwardness, eventually gives way to affection, and perhaps something more. The frequent co-stars first teamed up in 1992’s “Dracula,” and have also starred together in “A Scanner Darkly” and “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee,” and their continued chemistry shines through even in this first trailer.

The frequent co-stars first teamed up in 1992’s “Dracula,” and have also starred together in “A Scanner Darkly” and “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee,” and their continued chemistry shines through even in this first trailer.

Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder are set to star together in a new romantic comedy called Destination Wedding. If comes from Mad About You writer and executive producer Victor Levin.
This will be the third film that Reeves and Ryder have starred in together. The first film was Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula and second was Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly. It's kind of cool to see them working together again after all these years.
According to Variety, "Reeves and Ryder star as two miserable and unpleasant wedding guests who develop a mutual affection despite themselves over the course of the weekend event." Producer Robert Jones had this to say in a statement:
