Bill Cone only had one acting credit to his name, and that single screen appearance didn’t last very long, but it’s worth taking note of because it happens at the beginning of one of the best horror movies ever made, writer/director Don Coscarelli’s 1979 classic Phantasm (watch it Here). Cone plays a character named Tommy in that film, and it’s his death that gets the story rolling. Sadly, today we have to report that Bill Cone has passed away.
The news of Cone’s death was first shared on the official Phantasm Facebook page, where it was also revealed that he had contributed to the soundtracks of both Phantasm and Coscarelli’s earlier film Kenny & Company. Here’s the text from their post: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of one of the core Phantasm cast members, Bill Cone (aka Tommy from the...

Known to horror fans for his brief but memorable appearance as Tommy in Don Coscarelli’s original horror classic Phantasm (1979), actor and musician Bill Cone has passed away.
Bill Cone also worked behind the scenes on the horror classic, providing key contributions to its iconic soundtrack. Story goes that Cone was a fan of horror movies and expressed an interest in dying onscreen in one, which led to Coscarelli casting him as the ill-fated Tommy, whose death kickstarts the events of the film. And into the hallowed halls of horror history he went.
The official Phantasm page on Facebook writes, “We are saddened to learn of the passing of one of the core Phantasm cast members, Bill Cone (aka Tommy from the original Phantasm). In addition to acting, Bill was a superlative musician. He was a key collaborator on the original Phantasm soundtrack, providing skilled guitar work.

A remastered Phantasm took SXSW by storm Monday, March 14, in Austin, Tex. Director/writer Don Coscarelli was joined by series stars A. Michael Baldwin and Kathy Lester, co-producer Paul Pepperman, and J.J. Abrams himself, who, through his production company, Bad Robot, spearheaded the effort to get the film back to as pristine a condition as possible. The 1979 feature underwent a meticulous 4k restoration based off the original 35mm negative. While we’re sad that the Tall Man, Angus Scrimm, passed on last year, we’re hoping the flick will screen across the country soon so we can celebrate his contribution to horror cinema!

It’s hard to believe that another South by Southwest Film Festival is almost upon us, and this year’s lineup is yet another stellar collection of indie films, shorts, documentaries and experiential projects from all over the world. As we prepare to bring our readers extensive coverage over the next week from Austin, here’s a look at the 11 genre-related films and TV shows we’re excited to check out during the festival, which begins on Friday, March 11th.
[Writer’s Note: During Sundance 2016, this writer had the privilege of covering two great genre films: Under the Shadow from Babak Anvari and Mickey Keating’s Carnage Park. Since I had the chance to catch both of these films back in January, I decided it wouldn’t be fair to include them here in my preview piece (however, genre fans attending SXSW should definitely check out both films during the fest, as they are equally incredible).]
In a Valley of Violence (Director/Screenwriter: Ti West)
Festival Synopsis: From Blumhouse, the film tells the story of a drifter named Paul who arrives in a small town, seeking revenge on the thugs who murdered his friend. Sisters Mary Anne and Ellen, who run the town’s hotel, help Paul in his quest for vengeance. Cast: Ethan Hawke, Taissa Farmiga, James Ransone, Karen Gillan, John Travolta (World Premiere)

The terror of the Tall Man has stuck with viewers since his footsteps first echoed onscreen in 1979’s Phantasm, and last March it was revealed that Angus Scrimm’s legendary horror movie villain will stalk the screen one last time in Phantasm: Ravager. Boy!!! A quick way to send children behind the sofa is put this often overlooked Phantasm from Don Coscarelli on your television set. I’d be scared to go to a funeral home if I was up at a young age watching this at night! This movie is must see for fans who like low budget movies. “Halloween” may have gotten the most glory but I think “Phantasm” is a worthy top 5 of the 1970s in terms of low budget.

The last "Phantasm" film was released direct to video backin 1998, which is why it's surprising that a new installment, called "Phantasm V: Ravager," has finished shooting and unveiled the first trailer and poster. Check everything out below. The new movie was in the works for several years and brought back franchise regulars Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister, Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury and Kat Lester. But for the first time, Don Coscarelli did not direct. The job, instead went to David Hartman (Transformers Prime, Rob Zombie's "American Witch" and "Lords of Salem" videos). "I felt it was time to let someone else play with my train set," explained Coscarelli. "David and I go back to my film 'Bubba Ho-Tep.' He did terrific visual effects on that, and more recently created a wild animated sequence and some amazing visual effects in my most recent film, 'John Dies at the End.'...

Would you look at this! Filmmaker Don Coscarelli has made a fifth Phantasm movie called Phantasm V: Ravager, and he even released a teaser trailer. He's managed to keep the production of the film under warps for two years. It's really cool to see the Tall Man back.
The franchise started in 1979 under the direction of Coscarelli, he is a producer on this fifth film, but it was directed David Hartman, whobest known for animated series such as Transformers Prime and Roughnecks: Starship Troopers.
Original cast members Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Kat Lester, and Angus Scrimm are back as is Reggie Bannister as Reggie, whose decades-long search for the sinister Tall Man leads him to the Tall Man’s home world.
In an interview with EW, Coscarelli had this to say,
“I felt it was time to let someone else play with my train set. David and I go back to my film Bubba Ho-Tep.

Surprise, fanboys! One day after the first poster for “Phantasm V: Ravager” appeared online, the teaser trailer for the next installment of the long-running horror franchise popped up on the web. Since we don’t want to be one of the few outlets who aren’t covering this thing, you can check out the aforementioned clip below. Of course, I can’t wait to get my hands on “Ravager.” This genre-obsessed geek has had silver balls on the brain since “Phantasm II.” The most recent chapter of Don Coscarelli’s series arrived way back in 1998. Although I’ve changed a lot since those days, I still have plenty of time in my schedule for “Phantasm.” Reggie Bannister, Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Kat Lester, and the seemingly immortal Angus Scrimm are all back for “Ravager.” Although it’s anyone’s guess what in the world is happening in the teaser trailer,...

A couple of year ago, news surfaced that one of the largegst cult film series of all time would get a sequel. We haven't heard much about that long awaited new entry into the Phantasm series but it looks like a sequel isn't only on the way – it's almost here.
Earlier today a poster and trailer arrived for Phantasm V: Ravager and it looks as weirdly awesome as you might expect. Series regulars Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister, Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury and Kat Lester are all returning but Don Coscarelli is not. Instead, director David Hartman is taking over the reigns but with all of the blessings and support of Coscarelli who met Hartman on Bubba Ho-Tep. Har [Continued ...]...

For fans of the somewhat obscure horror franchise Phantasm, we have some surprisingly good news. The last film in the franchise went straight to video back in 1998, but 16 years later, a fifth film in the series is on the way. And we don't mean that it's in development, because the film is already done, having been shot over the past couple years. And if that's not enough good news, there's already a teaser trailer and poster to whet your appetite. And for those who are big fans, you'll be happy to know that Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister, Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury and Kat Lester are all returning for this one. Watch it! Here's the teaser trailer for Don Coscarelli's Phantasm V: Ravager from EW: And here's the poster for the horror sequel from Shock Til You Drop: The franchise's director Don Coscarelli co-wrote and oversaw the film, but this time...

For a few years now we’ve been waiting to learn more about Don Coscarelli’s last foray into his Phantasm franchise, but the horror director has been pretty tight lipped when discussing future plans – even denying the existence of Phantasm V: Ravager not too long ago. Can you blame him? Fans have eagerly been awaiting Coscarelli’s last “hoorah” concerning his most fabled property, and there was no reason to open up the floodgate of questions that a fifth film would create – until now.
A few days ago reports of Phantasm V: Ravager surfaced on a few major horror websites, but there was still a smidgen of speculation. Well, consider that doubt completely unnecessary, because we’ve now got the first trailer for David Hartman’s fifth and final Phantasm movie – final as in “if they don’t remake or reboot the franchise somewhere down the road.”

So surprising and unexpected was the reveal earlier this week of a teaser poster for Phantasm 5: Ravager that I think it's safe to say horror fans across the globe were checking their calendars and making sure it wasn't April 1st. As it turned out, not only was the piece of promo art quite real, but we soon learned that the fifth installment of the popular franchise had in fact already been shot, unbeknownst to pretty much everyone, over the course of the past two years.
And now, just a couple days after the poster reveal, the teaser trailer has arrived.
Entertainment Weekly scored the exclusive first look at the teaser, which shows the return of everyone's favorite ice cream man, Reggie, as well as the nefarious Tall Man and his pint-sized little demons. Though the clips runs only a minute long, it packs in enough familiar elements that it's...

When the surprise news broke earlier this week that a fifth Phantasm movie — called Phantasm: Ravager — was not just in the works but had actually been completed, it raised an awful lot of questions. Who directed the latest entry in the beloved cult horror franchise about the ghoulish, mysterious Tall Man and his lethal flying spheres? Which previous actors from the series (if any) would be making an appearance in the film? And when might we see some footage from the first Phantasm movie in 16 years?
EW can confirm that Phantasm: Ravager is directed by filmmaker and artist David Hartman,...

I remember hearing about rumblings of Phantasm V in the past few years. One rumor is that Coscarelli was shooting it pieces at a time. Today, Phans got a teaser that exclusively premiered on Ain’t It Cool News and other news from Shock Till You Drop. Read below for the summary and why Coscarelli might not be in the director’s chair.
Here’s the poster:
Here’s the info (courtesy of Phantasm Archives):
The “Lady in Lavender” will be in this entry To reiterate, this project has been filming little by little since 2008. The original working title for several years was “Reggie’s Tales.” The original cast members put in appearances along with some Don Coscarelli regulars. It was partly filmed in Crestline, CA at Reggie Bannister’s own home! Many of the familiar series elements are back… the ‘Cuda and the sphere especially. Oh, yes… there will be blood!

In 1979, horror fans all over the world witnessed a new kind of horror film with the release of Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. Now, as it nears its thirtieth anniversary, Phantasm will finally receive a “World Masoleum Premiere” in the most appropriate of venues: an actual cemetery! As part of their annual outdoor “Summer Screenings” series, Cinespia will present the original Phantasm – projected on the wall of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery mausoleum. The film’s stars “Tall Man” Angus Scrimm, “The Ice Cream Man” Reggie Bannister, Kat Lester and writer/director Don Coscarelli will be on hand to introduce the screening and reminisce about the making of what is now considered one of the seminal horror films of the last century.
