Hk cinema had a tendency to employ many people during a film production, but “The Swordsman” must be a unique case. King Hu, Ching Siu-Tung, Tsui Hark, Raymond Lee, Ann Hui and Andrew Kam are referred as directors and Wong Ying, Edward leung, Tai Foo-ho, Lam Kee-to, Lau Tai-muk and Kwan Man-leung as scriptwriters. Btw, this is not an omnibus, just a compact movie based on a novel by Louis Cha titled “The Smiling, Proud Wanderer”. Of course, there is a story here, since King Hu was originally credited as the director, but allegedly left the project midway, and the film was completed by a team led by producer Tsui Hark. Ann Hui was also part of the team, although uncredited, and since we tend to be completionists here at Amp, we decided to include “The Swordsman” in her project.

Set against the stock market crash and the Sino-British Joint Declaration in the 80's, “Last Romance” is an amalgam of a film, where, actually, the titular aspect is probably the least central one.
So-so and Nancy meet at high school when the former arrives there, and immediately become best friends, with the latter's family essentially functioning as one for the newcomer also, who is living in Hong Kong with her aunt and cousin, who lusts for her in the most annoying fashion. Eventually, they meet a half-Japanese classmate, Jiang-Jia, who both like immediately, to the point that they decide to take turns of who “stumbles” upon him after school. In the end, they manage to both go on a date with him in a theme park, but also manage to lose his phone number as the two girls leave in a taxi. Years pass, and So-so and Nancy take completely different paths in life,...

Director: The Pang Brothers. Review: Adam Wing. Few filmmakers thrill and frustrate the way The Pang Brothers do. Early collaborations – Bangkok Dangerous and The Eye in particular – were smash hits the world over. Their solo outings have been something of a mixed bag, with Oxide fairing slightly better than Danny. ‘Abnormal Beauty,’ ‘Diary’ and ‘The Detective’ are certainly worth a look, but recent offerings have definitely been more miss than hit. ‘Storm Warriors’ – a sequel to smash hit movie ‘The Storm Riders’ – was a huge disappointment, and over the last few years we have had to endure Hollywood misfire ‘The Messengers,’ as well as 3D infused (should that read infuriating?) features ‘The Childs Eye’ and ‘Sleepwalker.’ Re-cycle was released in 2006, sandwiched between ‘The Eye 2’ and their Hollywood debut; it’s also arguably their greatest achievement. Angelica Lee (married to Oxide and starring in the second of three collaborations with the siblings) is Ting-yin,...
