During his stint playing Commander William Riker on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Jonathan Frakes (seen above left) underwent a rudimentary director's boot camp. Frakes was interested in directing episodes of the show, and the producers said he would only be allowed to do so after shadowing other directors for 300 hours. Frakes put in his due diligence, and he ended up directing eight episodes of the series. The producers were so impressed that they also hired Frakes to direct two of the "Star Trek" feature films.

Exclusive: West Duchovny (Painkiller) and Scott Eastwood (Fast X) are in production in Austin, TX on Pearl, an indie drama written and directed by Marcos Efron (And Soon the Darkness), which will also star the Babylon duo of Lukas Haas and Ethan Suplee, along with Vincent Laresca (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood).

American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez joins the growing Ryan Murphy American Story franchise, following American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and American Horror Stories. Now, we are only two episodes in, but Sports Story is already a winner in my book. But it doesn't come without its flaws. Let’s dive in!

Before taking us through Aaron Hernandez’s (Josh Andres Rivera) troubled childhood, Sports Story kicks off with Aaron shooting his former friend Alexander Bradley (portrayed by Roland Buck III) and dumping his body. But Bradley did not die, and he is sure to let Aaron know, threatening him over the phone.

By the time Aaron Hernandez (Josh Rivera) points the gun at Odin Lloyd (J. Alex Brinson) in the eighth chapter of FX’s American Sports Story, we have been made to understand exactly how he got here. What might have seemed like a shocking act out of the blue in 2013, when the NFL superstar was first arrested for killing his friend, feels, after seven episodes of painstaking backstory, like the culmination of a perfect storm of unfortunate circumstances and worse choices. It’s no less horrifying, and no more justifiable. But it is more explicable.

NBC has put in development Major, a dance drama from Joyful Noise writer-director Todd Graff, Jennifer Lopez and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ Nuyorican Productions and Universal TV where Nuyorican is based.

Written by Graff, Major, said to be in the tone of Fame meets Chorus Line, is set at the most competitive and prestigious university dance department in the country. It focuses on the dancers and the teachers who are all struggling to define themselves, find their voices and pursue their dreams.

Graff executive produces and also is set to direct. Lopez, Goldsmith-Thomas, Kristel Laiblin and Benny Medina executive produce for Nuyorican. Universal TV produces in association with Nuyorican.

This is familiar territory for Graff, who wrote and directed music-themed features Joyful Noise, starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, and Bandslam starring Aly Michalka and Vanessa Hudgeons. Additionally, he is a Tony-nominated Broadway actor.

This is Nuyorican’s second recent broadcast sale.

Jennifer Lopez is teaming back up with “Shades of Blue” co-star Vincent Laresca for a new cop drama at NBC, “Blood Ties.”

The project, which has a script sale, will be written by former “The Mentalist” executive producer Tom Szentgyorgyi.

According to NBC, here is the logline for the drama: When convicted homicide detective Steve Horvath is exonerated, he’s given his job back but finds he now has unconventional insight about the criminals he faces. Teaming up with an unexpected rookie who has a secret agenda of his own, Horvath must learn to adapt to life outside of prison while trying to figure out who framed him and why.

Szentgyorgyi executive produces with Lopez and Goldsmith-Thomas for Nuyorican, Laresca, Jennifer Davisson and Lopez’s long-time manager Benny Medina. Kristel Laiblin is a co-executive producer.

On the heels of Shades of Blue ending its run after three seasons, star/executive producer Jennifer Lopez has teamed with co-star Vincent Laresca for a new cop drama, which has been put in development by NBC. Despite its big-name cast and a strong debut in its freshman year, the Shades of Blue TV show on NBC never quite lived up to expectations in the Nielsen ratings. After it dropped in season two, NBC issued a back-door cancellation, when it announced the third and final season premiere date. “Shades of Blue” will conclude after its third season, NBC said Wednesday. Its 10-episode final season will premiere on NBC on June 17.

“I have enjoyed producing and starring in this beautifully complicated world and playing such an empowering yet flawed character – a woman, a detective, but, first and foremost, a mother,” Lopez said. The pop star will continue her relationship with NBC with the second season of “World of Dance,” and she’s busy with other projects as well as her Las Vegas residency.

She said that playing Harlee “strengthened” her and “helped me grow into a more self-assured woman.”

Shades of Blue, NBC’s gritty drama starring Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta about corruption in the NYPD and the ramifications that ensue, has been renewed for a third season.

The announcement was made by Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment.

“We’re so hugely appreciative of everything Jennifer and Ray do, and know it is due to their dedication, as well as the hard work of our incredible cast and producers, that Shades of Blue has so clearly and compellingly earned a third-season renewal, Salke said.

“This show continues to mine powerful stories that always leave us hungry for more.”

Thus far in its second season, Shades of Blue is dominating the Sunday 10/9c hour among the ABC, CBS and NBC dramas, generating a +50% margin of victory in the of victory in the timeslot in adult 18-49 rating.

You may have wondered what Leonardo DiCaprio did after his big Oscars win. Clearly, he partied -- we're talking about Leo -- but based on reports from Page Six and The New York Daily News, he really bro-ed out with his boys, as opposed to just magically summoning a dozen new Victoria's Secret models. Anne Fletcher has had an admirably diverse career, and as a director, she's proven herself to be at least somewhat commercially adept. "Step Up" inspired a slew of sequels, "The Proposal" was one of the biggest of Sandra Bullock's hits, and now she's back with what looks like a big easy summer comedy hit, "Hot Pursuit." It would be a lot easier to give the film a soft pass if it wasn't so aggressively lazy. I get it. Formula is easy, and there are plenty of films that exist largely to play directly to expectations. Not every film has to be some radical reinvention of the form. A movie like "Hot Pursuit" is incredibly easy for the people who are giving out the greenlights to understand. "Two stars, on the road, mistaken for bad guys, lots of jokes." If you strike gold with that basic formula, you get "Midnight Run.

Whether he’s a wiseguy or a man of the law, Ray Liotta has a commanding onscreen presence which is scheduled to arrive in your homes later this year. TV Line reports that the Goodfellas star has joined NBC’s upcoming police drama, Shades Of Blue, along with Sons Of Anarchy‘s Drea De Matteo.

The pair are slated to join Jennifer Lopez, who previously snagged the lead. The scripts – written by 3 Days To Kill scribe Adi Hasak – must have been impressive, as it’s already secured a 13-episode straight-to-series order from the network.

"Marvel's Agents of Shield" will be taking Clark Gregg's Agent Phil Coulson to some dark places in the upcoming episode "Fzzt." In a new clip from the Nov. 5 episode, Coulson recalls the experience of dying in "The Avengers" to guest actor Vincent Laresca. 

"I've been where you are right now, so please believe me when I tell you, you don't have to be afraid," Coulson tells the man. "I got hurt once. Pretty bad. I died. Some say it was only for eight seconds, but I know it was more than that. I know I wasn't here anymore. I was there."

As Coulson gets more and more lost in that memory, Laresca's character asks him what dying is like. "It's beautiful," Coulson answers.

The subject of Coulson's death and how he is still alive have been ongoing mysteries on "Agents of Shield," so it's no surprise that the series...
