Last week, on behalf of Mercy For Animals, 20 Canadian-born celebrities added their names to a public letter addressing the CEO of Mod Pizza, urging the company to adopt a meaningful animal welfare policy for chickens in its supply chain.

Mod Pizza is the fastest-growing Us restaurant chain and recently opened its first Canada location.

Among the 20 public figures championing this campaign are actors including Beverly Hills, 90210 star Jason Priestley, Charmed star Sarah Jeffery, Lucifer star Tricia Helfer, Jane the Virgin star Brett Dier, Coroner star Serinda Swan, seven cast members of the iconic Candian TV series Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi: Next Class, as well as former NHL hockey player Georges Laraque.

A few years ago, an eclectic team of American and Canadian filmmakers teamed up for Goon. The Canadian comedy told the story of Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott), a bouncer turned minor league hockey enforcer, and the bruised and bloodied ice warriors that fought with and against him.

Canadian hockey fan Jay Baruchel co-wrote the script and played Doug’s friend Pat, while other Canucks like Alison Pill, Eugene Levy and Marc-André Grondin rounded out the cast. Former NHL tough guy Georges Laraque even had a cameo. But one of the most unexpected cast members may have been American Liev Schreiber (Spotlight, TV’s Ray Donovan) as enforcer Ross “The Boss” Rhea.

Goon has been on my radar ever since we showed you the great trailers last year. I have finally seen the flick and can tell you that it’s a great movie with a surprisingly sweet tone beneath some hard hitting ice time.

There are not a lot of hockey comedies out there, Slap Shot is the standard of course and respectfully I would say Goon stands right beside it. There are fights, lots of blood, lost teeth and a whole lot of cussing – this is second-tier hockey after all.

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - New York Rangers forward Sean Avery is out on bail after being arrested at his Hollywood home Friday on charges of battery of a police officer. Officers were called to Avery's home due to noise complaints. A Hollywood police department rep explained, "He didn't want to turn down the music at his home." Avery was arrested at 1 a.m. and taken in to custody. This is not the first time Avery has caused controversy, on or off the ice. Six years ago, former player Georges Laraque accused Avery of making racist comments. In 2008 - the same year the Ontario-native took an unpaid summer internship with Vogue magazine - he was suspended six games for making lewd comments about his ex-girlfriends who had started to date other NHL players. He also has a penalty nicknamed after him. The "Avery rule" came from an April 2008 incident...

Without any surprises, one of the most popular Canadian reality shows is back. For that matter, the Toronto Star revealed yesterday the identity of the competitors for the second season of this show that has been compared to Dancing with the Stars.

Here's the concept of Battle of the Blades: this reality pairs up eight retired NHL players with eight female figure skaters. Each week, each team will have to perform a choreography on Sunday nights live in Toronto. The next day, three team facing elimination will compete. At the end of this result day, the public's choice will be revealed. With that said, the winning team gets to donate $100,000 to a cause of their choice.

For this year, the Toronto Star revealed that participants, among the hockey players, include Theoren Fleury, Kelly Chase, Russ Courtnall, Valeri Bure, P.J. Stock, Patrice Brisebois, Todd Warriner and Georges Laraque.
