There has always been a tenuous relationship between live theatre and streaming. Some old-school voices in the theatre believe that allowing people to watch stage shows from the comfort of their own homes would disincentivize them from showing up to see shows in person. More progressive voices in the community argue that by giving audiences opportunities to stay excited about theatre in between trips to see shows only makes them more and more excited to see the real thing live and in person.

One company that is looking to bridge that gap is BroadwayHD, which launched in 2015 and has been a platform for filmed theatrical productions and stage-to-screen adaptations ever since. On Thursday, the company announced that it had reached a deal with NBCUniversal to stream a collection of NBC’s live musicals, including “Hairspray Live!”, “The Sound of Music Live!”, and “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” These titles...

Gayle King, co-host of “CBS Mornings” and editor-at-large of Oprah Daily, received the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism from Arizona State University on Tuesday at a ceremony in Phoenix.

Since 1984, the honor has been reserved for accomplished journalists who have demonstrated exemplary leadership skills. The award is named after the late Walter Cronkite, who anchored CBS Evening News for nearly two decades. Previous recipients include Al Roker, Anderson Cooper, Bob Woodward and more.

Schitt’s Creek actor Noah Reid will make his Broadway debut next spring in Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s The Minutes, the Tracy Letts play that was in previews when the Covid pandemic shutdown was announced in March 2020.

Reid will take the role of Mr. Peel, previously played by Armie Hammer, who withdrew from the production amidst sexual misconduct allegations.

The Minutes will resume performances at Studio 54 on March 19, 2022, with an official opening set for Thursday, April 7. Tickets are on sale today.

Reid will join the rest of the cast that was in place at the time of the shutdown: Letts, Ian Barford, Blair Brown, Cliff Chamberlain, K. Todd Freeman, Danny McCarthy, Jessie Mueller, Sally Murphy, Austin Pendleton and Jeff Still.

Exclusive: A new stage production of the 1970s cult comedy Women Behind Bars will stream exclusively on the BroadwayHD platform beginning August 26, with comedian Kathy Griffin hosting the presentation and, in their final performance, the late RuPaul Drag Race star Chi Chi Devayne.

Filmed in early 2020 at Hollywood’s Montalban Theater, the new production of Tom Eyen’s 1975 Off Broadway play also features RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars‘ Eureka O’Hara and Ginger Minj, John Waters favorites Mink Stole and Traci Lords, and Miss Coco Peru, Suzie Kennedy, Wesley Woods, Poppy Fields, Tatiana Monteiro and Adrienne Couper Smith.

Steppenwolf’s production of The Minutes, the new Tracy Letts play that had begun previews on Broadway when the industry shut down in March 2020, will resume performances in March 2022, with an official opening night on Thursday, April 7.

The play, with cast to be announced, will take up residence at Broadway’s Studio 54 theater, a move from its 2020 home at the Cort Theatre. Though Studio 54 is owned by the Roundabout Theatre Company, The Minutes is not a Roundabout production.

At the time of the shutdown, The Minutes starred Letts, Ian Barford, Armie Hammer, Blair Brown, Cliff Chamberlain, K. Todd Freeman, Danny McCarthy, Jessie Mueller, Sally Murphy, Austin Pendleton, and Jeff Still. Hammer dropped out of the production in April after becoming the subject of sexual misconduct allegations (the actor has denied all the accusations).

The move signals yet another way the pandemic shutdown has impacted Broadway’s shuffle of theater tenants and reopening schedules.

The Minutes, a political comedy directed by Anna D. Shapiro and starring Ian Barford, Blair Brown, Cliff Chamberlain, K. Todd Freeman, Armie Hammer, Tracy Letts, Danny McCarthy, Jessie Mueller, Sally Murphy, Austin Pendleton, and Jeff Still, began previews at the Shubert Organization’s Cort Theatre on Feb. 25, 2020. The Off Broadway run of Drew Droege’s well-received solo show Happy Birthday Doug was cut short by the Covid-19 shutdown, but a specially-filmed quarantine performance, produced by Michael Urie, is set to make its streaming debut.

Happy Birthday Doug, directed at the Soho Playhouse by Tom DeTrinis and directed for film and edited by Jim Hansen, will premiere on streaming service BroadwayHD September 24.

Written and performed by Droege, Happy Birthday Doug chronicles the 41st birthday of the title character. Droege plays Doug and all of his birthday party guests, a collection of gay men that includes “friends, exes, nightmares, tricks, and even a ghost.”

The Broadway revival of American Buffalo, orignally set to star Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Darren Criss, and the Steppenwolf production of Tracy Letts’ The Minutes are targeting Spring 2021 openings, though producers say the development of a coronavirus vaccine is “essential” to the plans.

Both productions had been scheduled to open during Spring 2020 prior to Broadway’s coronavirus shutdown in March. The casts have not been confirmed.

Inspired by a true story, “The Two Popes” stars Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI and Jonathan Pryce as the future Pope Francis in a verbal battle of wits over the future direction of the Catholic Church. The film is produced by Netflix, which has scheduled a limited theatrical release on Nov. 27 in the U.S. prior to its release on streaming on Dec. 20.

Festival audiences also chose Bong Joon ho’s dark comedy “Parasite” as first runner-up, with Alma Har’el’s “Honey Boy” and Craig Brewer’s “Dolemite Is my Name” tying for second runner-up.

According to a report, Screenvision and BroadwayHD will premiere the performance for one week only, running from February 13th through February 19th.

Filmed at the November 27th show at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, “Romeo & Juliet” will show in 2,000 movie theaters, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Helen Marie Guditis, Founder and President of The Theatre Museum , died of cancer, in her sleep. She valiantly fought for 4 years but succumbed to the disease on December 3, 2012. She was with family members, who said that she sang broadway show tunes until her last breath. Stewart F. The Book of Mormon, the musical comedy from the creators of South Park, was the big winner this morning when the 2011 Tony Award nominations were announced, earning 14 nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction. The Scottsboro Boys also cleaned up, with 12 nods. Tony winners Anika Noni Rose and Matthew Broderick made the announcements, and the ceremony will air Sunday, June 12 on CBS. The Drama League and its friends held a special cocktail reception for "Mr. Broadway" himself, Stewart F. Lane as he discussed producing for today's theatre.
