He was elected from the secondary position to the Finnish Parliament in
1996. Mr. Laine represented the Vasemmistoliitto ("The left wing union
party"). He was an replacement to the former MP Esko Seppänen (who was
subsequently elected to European Parliament). The musician turned MP
stayed in the Parliament for the remaining three years of the four-year
term, but was not elected again.
