(See previous post: “Gay Pride Movie Series Comes to a Close: From Heterosexual Angst to Indonesian Coup.”) Ken Russell's Valentino (1977) is notable for starring ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev as silent era icon Rudolph Valentino, whose sexual orientation, despite countless gay rumors, seems to have been, according to the available evidence, heterosexual. (Valentino's supposed affair with fellow “Latin Lover” Ramon Novarro has no basis in reality.) The female cast is also impressive: Veteran Leslie Caron (Lili, Gigi) as stage and screen star Alla Nazimova, ex-The Mamas & the Papas singer Michelle Phillips as Valentino wife and Nazimova protégée Natacha Rambova, Felicity Kendal as screenwriter/producer June Mathis (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse), and Carol Kane – lately of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame. Bob Fosse's Cabaret (1972) is notable as one of the greatest musicals ever made. As a 1930s Cabaret presenter – and the Spirit of Germany – Joel Grey was the year's Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner. Liza Minnelli...

Turner Classic Movies' 2017 Gay Pride film series comes to a close this evening and tomorrow morning, Thursday–Friday, June 29–30, with the presentation of seven movies, hosted by TV interviewer Dave Karger and author William J. Mann, whose books include Wisecracker: The Life and Times of William Haines and Behind the Screen: How Gays and Lesbians Shaped Hollywood, 1910-1969. Among tonight's movies' Lgbt connections: Edward Albee, Tony Richardson, Evelyn Waugh, Tab Hunter, John Gielgud, Roddy McDowall, Linda Hunt, Harvey Fierstein, Rudolf Nureyev, Christopher Isherwood, Joel Grey, and Tommy Kirk. Update: Coincidentally, TCM's final 2017 Gay Pride celebration turned out to be held the evening before a couple of international events – and one non-event – demonstrated that despite noticeable progress in the last three decades, gay rights, even in the so-called “West,” still have a long way to go. In Texas, the state's – all-Republican – Supreme Court decided that married gays should be treated as separate and unequal. In...

The 87th Academy Award nominations for 2015 were recently released on January 15, 2015 representing the excellence in film for the previous year. Naturally there was the standard controversy regarding those films and performances that got unfairly overlooked. Unfortunately, the perceived snubs do happen from year to year so this goes along with the territory. Nevertheless, the lucky selections that do manage to grab Oscar’s attention are understandably grateful and psyched to see if the golden statuette will in fact go home with them on the film industry’s biggest and most elegant evening.
With the obvious crankiness of Oscar omissions aside and the injustices that go with these “reel” deals has anyone ever considered the Academy Award nominees that are surprisingly recognized that could have gone unnoticed for whatever reasoning? After all there are films and exceptional performances that get lost in the shuffle but manage to get the accolades it...

Indeed it is sad news to acknowledge the passing of Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated actor James Garner (1928-2014). The Hollywood icon Garner has endured a remarkable show business career during a five-plus decade stretch as he has entertained generations of TV and film audiences throughout the ages. Upon the death of this immensely likable leading man on both the small and big screen many are probably wondering about their mortality at this point. After all, you either grew up with James Garner as a peer or spent your childhood watching him in your living rooms on the boob tube or at the local movie theater.
Although the majority of folks associate Garner with television from his first western series Maverick in the 1950′s to his landmark role as ex-con Pi Jim Rockford in the 1970′s The Rockford Files (some teens and young adults may recall his brief stint as grandfather Jim...

Presenting “Love Always,” a recurring feature in which we pay tribute to the women who helped shape our views on pop culture.
This time we pay a 49th birthday tribute to one of the great child stars of all time, who overcame the pitfalls of Hollywood to carve out a successful adult career.
Here are ten reasons why I will Love Always … Brooke Shields.
She Introduced Us To Christopher Atkins And Martin Hewitt
In Blue Lagoon, Brooke and her breast merkin introduced us to the natural wonders of Christopher Atkins, and the two would learn the ways of sex by watching giant sea turtles copulating. The following year, in Endless Love, she would once again come through for us by giving us one of the most underrated bits of 80′s beefcake, Martin Hewitt.

The 1986 monster sequel King Kong Lives was a flop for producer Dino De Laurentiis, but a source of remarkable details for us...
Producer Dino De Laurentiis assembled an all-star cast and gathered a colossal budget for his 1976 remake of King Kong. Once again a story about a giant ape transported to New York and running amok, the 1976 King Kong overcame its production difficulties - including a malfunctioning 40ft tall mechanical ape designed by Carlo Rambaldi - and became a sizeable hit.
A decade later, De Laurentiis decided that it was finally time to make a sequel to King Kong, and brought back director John Guillermin (not to mention a much smaller budget of $10m) to make King Kong Lives. Unfortunately, by the middle of the 80s, nobody seemed to be particularly keen on seeing another giant ape movie - especially one full of countryside...

Oprah Winfrey to help ‘The Butler’ top the domestic box office? (Photo: Oprah Winfrey, Terrence Howard in ‘The Butler’) About a week ago, Oprah Winfrey was in the news for being told that a $38,000 crocodile-skin purse at a store in Zurich wasn’t really for her. The uproar was related to racism: possibly, supposedly, maybe the saleswoman-for-the-filthy-rich felt that a black woman wouldn’t be able to afford a $38,000 crocodile-skin purse, even though those stores for the disgustingly megarich — I mean, $38,000 for a goddamned purse? Crocodile skin? — surely cater to the wives and mistresses and aunts of megarich African entrepreneurs and dictators alike. Fast forward a week or so and … Oprah Winfrey is back in the news as a result of another "incident" related to ethnic issues: the weekend debut of Lee Daniels’ The Weinstein Company-distributed The Butler, about a black butler in the appropriately named White House. The Butler...

HollywoodNews.com: You may have wondered, if you are in the film business, why did Disney want Dreamworks? The answer is “The Help,” which opens August 10th and is astonishingly good. I mean, it’s so good that Disney will be going to awards shows this winter with actual people instead of just animated characters. “The Help,” of course, comes from tbe best seller, and that doesn’t always guarantee a good outcome. In this case, boy oh boy, everyone got what they paid for and then some.
Right off the bat: Bryce Dallas Howard, the actress/producer and Ron Howard‘s talented daughter, finally breaks through with this film. She is just mesmerizing as the nastiest piece of work you could hope to find a film. Her Hilly hasn’t got one redeeming feature. She is a racist and truly awful. But despite being a villainess extraordinaire, Bryce is never once campy or stereotypical.

Though the TV Academy also uses the annual ceremony (airing live on CBS at 8 p.m. Et) to honor game and talk shows, the real competition lies in the drama categories. Cancelled Soaps Land Top Daytime Emmy Nominations
Axed U.S. soaps All My Children and One Life To Live are set to go out with a bang after scoring a combined total of 25 nominations for the 2011 Daytime Emmy Awards.
Earlier this year, ABC network bosses announced All My Children will come to an end in September after 41 years on air, while One Life To Live will also be scrapped following a 43-year run.
But the shows look set to dominate the 38th annual Daytime Emmys - All My Children, which has 13 nominations, is up for Outstanding Drama Series, competing against The Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital and The Young and the Restless, while its stars Alicia Minshew, Debbi Morgan and Ricky Paull Goldin will all do battle in the Leading Drama Actor categories.
All My Children's Melissa Claire Egan will go up against One Life To Live actress Bree Williamson for Best Supporting Drama Actress title, alongside the likes of Julie Pinson (As The World Turns), Heather Tom (The Bold and the Beautiful) and Tricia Cast (The Young and the Restless), while Williamson's co-star Brian Kerwin will fight for Best Supporting Drama Actor, a category which includes Jonathan Jackson and Jason Thompson from General Hospital.
Medical drama series General Hospital leads the nominations with 21, while The Young and The Restless garnered 20 and children's show Sesame Street earned 16.
Comedienne-turned-talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is also set for a big night after taking 12 nods, including Outstanding Talk Show - pitting The Ellen DeGeneres Show against The View, Regis & Kelly and Rachael Ray.
DeGeneres' hit programme also gained recognition for direction, set design and make-up, although the star herself failed to land a nomination for Outstanding Talk Show Host - a title she has won four times before. Instead, The View's star-studded line-up - consisting of Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sherri Shepherd, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Barbara Walters - will battle against the presenters of Regis & Kelly, Rachael Ray, The Doctors and Dr. Oz for the top TV category.
The nominees for the 2011 Daytime Emmy Awards, which celebrate the best in U.S. TV production, were announced early on Wednesday.
The winners will be unveiled at a ceremony in Las Vegas on 19 June. Actor/comedian Wayne Brady will host.

November 10, 2010 is the day that we lost prolific film producer Dino De Laurentiis at the age of 91. He modeled himself after Samuel Goldwyn, and he truly was the last of the great movie moguls. His resume speaks for itself, and no one can deny he had a little Frank Sinatra in him; he did it his way.
His overblown grandiose spectacles are usually the ones I felt the most drawn to. I am not afraid to admit that I like a good bad movie, and Dino made more than his fair share. One of them being King Kong Lives [King Kong 2], a sequel to his own horrid 1976 remake.
What better way to pay tribute to Dino De Laurentiis but to find someone who not only met him, but an individual who worked on one of his pictures who has great stories to tell. Let me step aside for this one and let...

There weren't really any offers, but Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton's co-star in 80s flicks Aliens, The Terminator and Tombstone, is shutting the doors on appearing on Big Love, adding that the polygamy concept of the show is "a bore" anyway. Somebody didn't watch season 4, that's for sure.
Chloe Sevigny Versus 'Big Love'
Biehn, 53, tells Movie Web that he was supposed to reunite with Paxton as he was considered for the part of Bill Henrickson's uncle and his mom Lois' younger brother Eddie, a role which eventually went to Brian Kerwin.

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: Regarding that, um, interesting scene of Kirk (Chris Pine) in his underwear in the new Star Trek: since the movie supposedly takes place in the 22nd century, that's presumably what men will be wearing then, right? So where can I get the underwear of the future ... today? -- Steve, Philadelphia, Pa
A: Personally, the Flying Monkey is holding out hope that the not-so-distant future will see a return to the simple beauty that is a pair of tighty-whities, but I suppose I should just be thankful that the new Smokin' Hot Kirk wasn't wearing saggy, baggy boxers.
Unfortunately, the undies worn by Smokin' Hot Kirk in the movie were made of pure Romulan silk and were created by the Edoian designer Rakop in the year 2250. In other words, they don't actually exist yet.

Latiano nabs 'Virgin' role at Lifetime
Newcomer Jill Latiano has been tapped to star in the Lifetime drama pilot The Virgin of Akron, Ohio.
Brian Kerwin, Chelah Horsdal, Landon Liboiron, Matthew John Armstrong and Shawn Roberts also have joined the cast in addition to the previously cast Laurie Metcalf.
Virgin, from Fox TV Studios, centers on Raleigh (Latiano), a young model in Manhattan who after a stint in rehab is sent back to her Ohio town to do community service and live with her dysfunctional family. The woman becomes a local celebrity after published reports say that a vision of Virgin Mary came down to bless her after she had a car crash on her way home.
Kerwin will play Raleigh's father, a caring, intelligent judge, while Horsdal will play her older, overworked, jealous sister, and Liboiron will play her clean-cut kid brother. Metcalf has been cast as Raleigh's perfectionist mother.
Armstrong will play a former cop who befriends Raleigh, while Roberts will play the handsome, athletic "big catch" in Akron.

`FILM REVIEW: Abandoned and Deceived'
A movie about loss of dignity and women's rights, ``Abandoned and Deceived'' wrestles some big issues but doesn't come out with a satisfying win.
After Gerri Jensen (Lori Loughlin) divorces her husband, he becomes a deadbeat, stops paying child support and skips town.
Gerri spends her savings, returns to her parents' Wisconsin home and tries to subsist on minimum-wage jobs.
Her two kids don't have enough food, and her in-laws are horrid. The solutions are equally bleak: quit job for welfare money, keep job and get government-subsidized cheese handouts.
After months of trying to track down her ex-husband, facing smug and nasty bureaucrats all the way, Gerri reaches the end of her rope, and she becomes an inadvertent advocate for oppressed women.
It's got the right ingredients, but the movie lacks depth.
The conflict is presented somewhat formulaically, not with a lack of conviction, but with a lack of believability.
More is made about the electricity being turned off than Gerri becoming seriously ill.
One obstacle is that there is little sense of passage of time.
In an almost sublime show of bad luck, the script introduces Gerri's problems one right after the other, piling them on instead of letting them pile up.
Then, the scraping-along theme seems to disappear once Gerri begins fighting for her rights.
Loughlin's performance is fair, and sometimes her acting is a little forced.
Also, it seems the script, more than the story, dictates the character's highs and lows.
Writing rings false at times, seeming slightly out of sync with the beat of the story.
``Abandoned and Deceived'' does a good deed in presenting a social ill; unfortunately, the social responsibility overshadows the artistic one.

Writing rings false at times, seeming slightly out of sync with the beat of the story.
``Abandoned and Deceived'' does a good deed in presenting a social ill; unfortunately, the social responsibility overshadows the artistic one.

'Love Field'
Frequent fliers might understand the title ''Love Field, '' but the general public will be misled by this romantic moniker, especially when coupled with the star billing of Michelle Pfeiffer.
In this case, the title refers to the Dallas airport where John F. Kennedy landed prior to his assassination. Viewers expecting a passionate romp may be initially disgruntled, but ultimately charmed, by this backroads psychological journey where a young wife finally learns to trust herself.
''Love Field'' is essentially what Harry Cohn used to call a ''bus picture, '' a colorful odyssey where a man and a woman fussed and fought and eventually came to love each other. Prospects look rosiest on a limited run, however, before ''Love Field'' naturally lands at its most hospitable venue, rental city.
Not gussied up with a convertible T-bird, bourbon or gunplay, this woman-on-the-road odyssey is a sweet and scratchy portrait of a young wife, Lurene (Pfeiffer), whose marriage is as boring as an ironing board. Pretty Lurene married, basically, the boy next door (Brian Kerwin) and has been bored out of her mind ever since.
He's a nice guy, opens his own Budweisers and everything, but he'd eat creamed corn every day if she'd serve it to him. And she's getting sick and tired of her monotonous Campbell's soup life.
Not real smart, Lurene doesn't have other outlets. She doesn't get ''ordinary life.'' So, she takes to fixating on Jackie Kennedy, assumes her one-piece style and little pillbox hat and, in her most hungry yearnings, regards her armchair frontiersman as JFK. When the president is shot, she knows she must be at Jackie's side, go to the funeral.
Over her husband's perplexed objections, Lurene flies the coop. She hops on a bus, where even by the standards of public transportation, Lurene has the makings of a seat companion from hell. She chatters incessantly to a skeptical black man, Paul Dennis Haysbert), and his withdrawn young daughter (Stephanie McFadden), babbling her entire life.
But Paul, too, is running from his past, trying to establish a new life. The two forge a desperate bond, although he notes there's a difference between ''being bored and being black.''
Like most journeys, this sojourn has its slow spots, but screenwriter Don Roos has crafted a solid character-driven saga. Director Jonathan Kaplan's eye is ever receptive to off-roads color, allowing the story to bounce and bump along in its charmingly offbeat way.
Pfeiffer is superb as the bouffant-topped Lurene, marvelously capturing her nervous dissatisfaction and energies, while Haysbert is well-cast as the stoic, dignified Paul.
Technical contributions are smartly fleshed, in particular Mark Freeborn's trans-Americana production design and Peter Mitchell's period-packed costumes.
