The Captive Heart
The Captive Heart, 4pm, Talking Pictures TV (Freeview Channel 82), Tuesday, February 1
This drama set against the backdrop of a PoW camp was one of the first of its type, arriving less than a year after Ve Day and speaking to those who were fully aware of the real thing. Like Das Boot, which is also in our selection this week, there's a real sense of the tedium of camp life as well as the trouble. It features nuanced performances by Jack Warner and Mervyn Jons as friends before the war facing this together. The standout, however, is Michael Redgrave, as a man who claims to be a British officer - having stolen the dead man's identity - and who soon falls under suspicion leading him to write to the dead man's wife (played by Redgrave's real life wife Rachel Kempson) with unexpected consequences. Although Basil Dearden occasionally.

This moody, unsettling whodunnit benefits from sensitive cinematography, fine direction and a perfectly-cast group of players. Stephen Boyd gets a worthwhile starring role, backed by some good names and a nice debut from Judi Dench. What I don’t understand is why Pamela Franklin, possibly the most talented and versatile young English player ever, didn’t become a major star. She’s more than half the picture here.

Lynn Redgrave burst to stardom with this fine study of romance vs. reality in swinging London circa 1966. Georgy thinks of herself as a plain Jane next to her popular roommate, played by Charlotte Rampling. Alan Bates is the flighty boyfriend and James Mason the old millionaire making indecent proposals. How can a good girl get somewhere in life? As sometimes happens, the song by The Seekers has retained more fame than the movie.

Constance Cummings: Stage and film actress ca. early 1940s. Constance Cummings on stage: From Sacha Guitry to Clifford Odets (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Flawless 'Blithe Spirit,' Supporter of Political Refugees.”) In the post-World War II years, Constance Cummings' stage reputation continued to grow on the English stage, in plays as diverse as: Stephen Powys (pseudonym for P.G. Wodehouse) and Guy Bolton's English-language adaptation of Sacha Guitry's Don't Listen, Ladies! (1948), with Cummings as one of shop clerk Denholm Elliott's mistresses (the other one was Betty Marsden). “Miss Cummings and Miss Marsden act as fetchingly as they look,” commented The Spectator. Rodney Ackland's Before the Party (1949), delivering “a superb performance of controlled hysteria” according to theater director and Michael Redgrave biographer Alan Strachan, writing for The Independent at the time of Cummings' death. Legendary actor and life-long activist Vanessa Redgrave on bad habits, brother Corin and why the battle for the beleaguered Travellers of Dale Farm matters so much to her
When Corin Redgrave suffered a heart attack while pleading with councillors not to evict Travellers from Dale Farm in Essex in summer 2005, his sister, Vanessa, was thousands of miles away in the Us. "If it wasn't for a Traveller giving him mouth to mouth, he would have died," she says. "As it was he had such loss of oxygen to his brain that he had extreme short-term memory loss. Forty Travellers came to the Basildon hospital to pray for him."
So is her current support for the Travellers due to be evicted from Dale Farm later this month to honour her dead brother? "Oh very, very, very much so. The Dale Farm Travellers are inseparable from him for me. It's totally personal.

"I like the whole thing of transforming into other people," Lynn Redgrave told Back Stage's Dany Margolies in 2006, when Redgrave was starring in "The Importance of Being Earnest" at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. "I like the search for it. And I like the hours of the day that are spent in some of their company—some more than others. Some characters, I like their company so much that I literally grieve for their loss when I'm done; others not."We will certainly grieve for the loss of this magnificent actor, who died May 2 at the age of 67. She first came to prominence as the daughter of classical stage actors Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson and as the younger sister of the better-known Vanessa and Corin. Even by the colourful standards of her own family's public profile and professional achievements, Lynn Redgrave, who has died of breast cancer aged 67, was an exceptional personality. Her death seems particularly cruel after the loss of both her niece, Natasha Richardson, after a skiing accident last year, and her brother, Corin Redgrave, last month. The third child of the actors Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, Lynn was a gifted comedian who received her first Oscar nomination for a delightful, clownish performance in the title role of Georgy Girl (1966), one of the defining movies of the so-called swinging 60s. She went on to spend many years living and working in America. Less politically engaged than her older siblings, Vanessa and Corin, she was no less a remarkable talent.

Lynn Redgrave, who shot to international fame for her performance as a free-spirited bird in 1966's "Georgy Girl," died Sunday at her home in Connecticut after a battle with breast cancer. She was 67.
Redgrave's turn as a chubby, childlike Londoner pursued by her father's middle-aged boss (James Mason) won her an Oscar nomination for best actress and the New York Film Critics Circle Award. She garnered another Academy Award nomination for supporting actress in "Gods and Monsters" (1998), playing a testy housekeeper.
Redgrave hailed from a venerable theatrical family. She was the younger sister of actress Vanessa Redgrave and actor Corin Redgrave and the daughter of Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson.
Her death comes a year after her niece Natasha Richardson died from head injuries sustained in a skiing accident and just a month after the death of Corin. Redgrave was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2002, had a mastectomy in January 2003 and underwent chemotherapy.

David Thacker, artistic director of the Octagon theatre and the man who masterminded Corin Redgrave's return to the stage, remembers the actor, who died this week at the age of 70
I first saw Corin's work at a special event at the Liverpool Playhouse. Corin, Vanessa, their father Michael and their mother Rachel Kempson were performing a variety of extracts from Shakespeare's plays and some of their favourite sonnets. It made a huge impression on me for a number of reasons. Michael was seriously afflicted by Parkinson's disease, and had by this time very limited short-term memory. I shall never forget Vanessa and Corin standing next to him, feeding him lines which he then delivered with astonishing sensitivity. The "seven ages of man" speech from As You Like It was performed with a depth of understanding that was completely new to me. Corin's contribution to the evening was equally memorable.

Redgrave had been in poor health for several years, having survived both prostate cancer and a massive heart attack in 2005. Though less famous than sisters Vanessa Redgrave and Lynn Redgrave, or their father, Michael Redgrave, Corin did star in numerous stage productions and appeared in a few films as well. His mother was actress Rachel Kempson, who was featured in a handful of British films. His daughter is actress Jemma Redgrave. A political radical, as an actor he excelled at playing tortured establishment figures
Corin Redgrave, who has died aged 70, was both a formidable actor and a strenuous political activist. But, while it is fashionably easy to suggest that his career was blighted by his political activities, I suspect his talent was intimately related to his radical political convictions. And, if he enjoyed a golden theatrical rebirth from the late 1980s onwards, it may have had less to do with politics than with his determination to inherit the mantle of his revered father. Before he suffered a severe heart attack in 2005, Redgrave's later years yielded some of his finest work.

Although she receives the crowning accolade from her peers tonight, the great radical has had the worst of years following the death of her daughter
When Vanessa Redgrave receives her Bafta fellowship this evening from Prince William, it will be a moment rich in theatrical potential. First, there is the pathos: the great veteran actress, still vibrant at 73, bestowed with a crowning professional accolade one year on from the death of her daughter, Natasha Richardson, in a skiing accident.
Then the dramatic irony of the revolutionary Marxist accepting the award from a prince. And finally the dreadful tension: what will she say in her speech?
Redgrave does not boast the most tactful history of acceptance speeches. Four years ago, having been recognised for her lifetime's achievement by the Transylvania film festival, she dedicated the award to a group campaigning against a gold mine in Romania owned by one of the festival's sponsors.

Redgrave's Secret Dating Past
Vanessa Redgrave's family forced her to call off her engagement to a man in the 1960s - for fear it would damage her Hollywood career.
The veteran actress began dating Gavin Welby when she first started out in the Royal Shakespeare Company aged 23 and told her father, Sir Michael Redgrave, she planned to marry her sweetheart.
But Sir Michael, along with the star's mother Rachel Kempson, feared she would become a housewife and sacrifice her movie career if she wed, according to previously unseen letters in the archives of the famous acting dynasty.
Kempson wrote to her husband, “Vanessa is completely infatuated... I only pray we can prevent marriage.”
Her parents' disapproval worked - the actress eventually ended the relationship.
She told her father, “I have decided not to marry Gavin because, although I do love him, for various reasons I know it wouldn’t work... I had a talk with Mum this evening and realised that it is the only thing to do.”
Redgrave went on to marry film director Tony Richardson in 1962 before they divorced five years later. She wed Italian actor married Franco Nero in 2006.
