Their fight is against a formidable foe in Vladimir Putin, who has tightened his grip on power over decades. Anyone who challenges the regime’s control or corruption faces dire consequences. We learn of political leaders murdered through poisoning and journalists threatened with the same sinister fate for their work exposing the Kremlin. Facing such a ruthless machine, speaking the truth is a perilous act of courage.
Jones introduces us to three individuals on the frontlines. There is the scientist who helped develop dangerous poisons, only to become a whistleblower when learning of their use against dissenters. To escape retaliation, he must flee at all costs. A political activist who survived two...

Serving the entertainment industry for more than two decades is a big deal, and Christopher Nolan has been doing it flawlessly. But there are several filmmakers, who played a major role in Nolan’s success. One such inspiration is Terrence Malick, who has unknowingly influenced Nolan’s works to such an extent, that today the Tenet director has turned into one of the most celebrated filmmakers.
Christopher Nolan on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
Although the visionary director, Terrence Malick has been overlooked by the Academy Awards for years, his works have reached out to people and fans like Christopher Nolan. Hailed for his truly epic, and humanitarian films like Badlands, The Thin Red Line, and The Tree of Life, Malick’s works have transcended boundaries.

The fundamental thing about documentary filmmaking is telling a story in a manner that is exciting enough to grab the attention of the audience. Otherwise, why would you watch something about which you can find basically everything on the internet itself? Apple TV’s latest documentary series about former Nissan and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn, titled Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn, follows this fundamental thing to a tee. As a result, watching the four-episode docuseries feels like watching a big-budget Hollywood thriller. The story itself is something that any filmmaker would grab to make cinema out of it. Someone like Michael Mann or Ben Affleck would do proper justice to it, for sure.
The documentary series is helmed by James Jones, who also happens to be a big deal. The BAFTA-winning documentary filmmaker has done many great works in the past that have covered grave international matters like the...

Fred Zinnemann’s sturdy adaptation of James Jones’s army melodrama remains an underrated slice of homoerotic, bittersweet war-is-hell film-making
Seventy years ago, in the midst of mass critical adulation and storming box office for From Here to Eternity, the Guardian published one of the film’s few tepid reviews. “No doubt no army in a free country was at its best in pre-war years,” wrote the paper’s unnamed film critic, “but surely no unit of the American Army was quite so corrupt as this account would have us believe.” The acting and directing were “first-class”, the critic acknowledged; the film itself “[defied] credibility”.
Viewed in 2023, Fred Zinnemann’s big, muscular melodrama of Hawaiian barracks life in the months leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor has inevitably dated a bit – though perhaps not as much as the Guardian’s concern that it did the US army a bit dirty.

BAFTA gave out their Craft Awards on Sunday, 23 April. As with the Primetime Emmys, the British academy also devotes a weekend to celebrating the creative arts. The BAFTA TV Craft Awards are split into 20 categories, with six devoted to fictional programming, six to factual programming, and a further four in combined fields.
The BBC medical drama “This is Going to Hurt” won three awards — Editing (Fiction), Scripted Casting, and Writer (Drama) for show creator Adam Kay. Kay adapted his best-selling memoir, which chronciled his experiences as a doctor in the NHS. Kay won in a stacked category that included Pete Jackson (“Somewhere Boy”), Alice Oseman (“Heartstopper) and Tony Schumacher (“The Responder”). “This is Going to Hurt” will contend at the Emmys in the limited series categories.
Meanwhile, Writer (Comedy) went to Lisa McGee for her work on “Derry Girls,” which follows a teenage girl and family in friends in 1990s Northern Ireland.

The first episode showed Matt Blankinship, Sarah Wade, and Lauren Harpe going on the journey. They all had to pick one of three packages to either lose their vote or gain an advantage.
Someone who loses their vote could draw again at the risk of losing their vote for two Tribal Councils. Sarah lost her vote and tried again. That time she got the inheritance advantage. The new advantage allows you to secretly inherit all advantages and idols played at one Tribal Council.
“That’s awesome,” the management consultant said. “I think that’s totally worth losing one vote.”

Updated with full winners’ list and more details, including a leading three awards for Fire of Love: All That Breathes and All the Beauty and the Bloodshed — the two frontrunners for best documentary at the Oscars — split the top awards at the 16th annual Cinema Eye Honors in New York tonight.
Filmmaker Laura Poitras won Outstanding Direction for her work on All the Beauty and the Bloodshed. But it was All That Breathes, directed by Shaunak Sen, that earned Outstanding Nonfiction Feature, the Cinema Eye Honors’ equivalent to the Oscars’ Best Documentary Feature (see full list of winners below).
Sen’s film examines the work of Nadeem and Saud – two brothers in Delhi, India – who have devoted their energies to rehabilitating birds of prey like the black kite, which suffer in the polluted air of the metropolis.

After 26 days of swollen ankles, last gasps and shocking betrayals, the winner of “Survivor 43” was crowned during the December 14 season finale on CBS. (Read our minute-by-minute live blog to see how it all went down.). The episode began with just the Top 5 finalists left in the running to win the 1 million prize: Cassidy Clark, Mike Gabler, Jesse Lopez, Karla Cruz Godoy and Owen Knight. But only one of them had what it took to outwit, outplay and outlast the others and join the “Survivor” winners list.
By the end of the second hour, Karla and Jesse had both been eliminated from the game, leaving the Top 3 castaways to face the jury. Host Jeff Probst then read the jury votes aloud in dramatic fashion. Gabler ended up winning the title of Sole Survivor with seven votes, while Cassidy came in second place with one vote and Owen placed third with zero votes.

All season long, Gold Derby readers have been making their predictions for who they think will take home the 1 million grand prize on “Survivor 43.” With just hours left to go before the season finale airs December 14 on CBS, the overwhelming favorite to win is Jesse Lopez. This 30-year-old survey methodologist from North Carolina was solely responsible for ousting his biggest threat, Cody Assenmacher, during the penultimate episode. Jesse also holds a secret immunity idol that should theoretically bring him to the Final 4, at which case he’d truly be vulnerable for the first time ever.
Here are Gold Derby’s current “Survivor 43” winner predictions for the Top 5:
1. Jesse Lopez — 23/50 odds
2. Karla Cruz Godoy — 8/1 odds
3. Cassidy Clark — 10/1 odds
4. Owen Knight — 12/1 odds
5. Mike Gabler — 28/1 odds

If you’re taking bets on which of the final five on “Survivor 43” is going to make it to the three chairs at the final tribal council, your safest bet is Owen Knight. And yet if you’re betting on who is the most likely to actually win, put him at the bottom of your list. Left out from the majority in many post-merge votes and without much agency to make decisions, Owen has been the string-along goat of the season. Still, we think he’s locked and loaded to make it to the end. Below, we take a look at why he we don’t think he’ll win in our “Survivor 43” finale spotlight.
As it stands in the final five, Owen is strongly aligned to Mike Gabler and loosely aligned to Jesse Lopez. Gabler is a safe bet for Owen to go to the end with, but after...

With two immunity and one fire-making challenge left to play out in the “Survivor 43” finale, wins are going to be a huge factor in determining who takes home the million dollar prize. Having already proven herself as a threat in both physical and mental challenges and coming off the heels of an important immunity win at final six, Cassidy Clark is poised to mount a late-game challenge streak that could turn the heads of the jury. She is the best dark horse candidate to win. Below, we take a look at how she could pull it off in our “Survivor 43” finale spotlight.
Cassidy’s journey to the final five has been one of the quieter ones. Her early game was defined mostly by her antagonizing of tribe mate Ryan Medrano and the vengeance she sought against him for voting for her week five. When the merge hit, Cassidy fell into...

Up until a few weeks ago, Karla Cruz Godoy was one of the most powerful players in “Survivor 43,” but poor decisions and ill-conceived lies have left her at the back of the pack heading in to Wednesday’s finale. Tricked into playing her immunity idol a week too early and deceived by her now former allies, Karla goes into the final five without protection and seen as the least trustworthy player left. In order to make it to the final tribal council she’ll need to repair the damage. Below, we take a look at where she might find support in our “Survivor 43” finale spotlight.

Wednesday’s 10th episode of “Survivor 43” featured one of the most epic displays of determination when Noelle Lambert overcame a huge deficit to win the reward challenge. After the valiant feat, Noelle’s comrades in the game took advantage of a window of opportunity to blindside her at the next tribal council, sending her to jury as the fourth member. Read on for her “Survivor 43” exit interview from the end of the episode.
After two unanimous votes last week, Noelle’s elimination was a return to form for a group of players that have been maneuvering through votes with only slim majorities. Noelle was voted out 5-2-1 with a meaningful tip of scales against her from original tribe mates Jesse Lopez and Cody Assenmacher. The result for Noelle was a blindside that she attributes to them having “smelled it coming.” She says, “I came into this game wanting to...

If it’s true that liars end up with pants on fire, Cassidy Clark is going to need some new britches. In CBS’s latest “Survivor 43” secret scene (watch above), the 26-year-old designer from Texas lies right to Ryan Medrano‘s face about who voted him during the tribal council when Jeanine Zheng ultimately went home. Ryan received two votes that night: one from Jeanine and one from Cassidy. But the 25-year-old warehouse associate from Texas had no idea who was responsible for that second vote.
“Guys, I thought I was going to get voted out and didn’t have my giant shells. I was going to be upset,” Ryan tells the group on Night 16 after they all return to camp. In a private confessional, he reveals, “So tribal was supposed to be an easy vote. Everybody was in unison with [voting out] Jeanine. But somebody other than Jeanine put my name down at tribal.

Wednesday’s ninth episode of “Survivor 43,” Jeff Probst surprised the top 10 with two immunity idol necklaces and two tribal councils. The players returned the favor by surprising us with two blindsides. In the first of the night’s two eliminations, James Jones was hoodwinked by Karla Cruz Godoy, Owen Knight, Noelle Lambert and Sami Layadi. Read his “Survivor 43” exit interview below.
In a long history of blindsides, the move against James will go down as one of the best planned and most satisfying for those that made it. The set up was perfected once James and Owen, his growing arch nemesis in the game, were sorted into the same group to attend a split tribal council together. In the prior week, James had lied to Owen about the group voting out Ryan Medrano, leaving him as the odd man out in what ended up being a vote against his ally Jeanine Zheng.

On Wednesday’s ninth episode of “Survivor 43,” a battle looks to be brewing between Owen Knight and James Jones. “James is dangerous,” Owen proclaims, referring to when James lied to him about the recent vote. Even though the majority of players were planning on voting out Jeanine Zheng, James told Owen that Ryan Medrano was actually the target. Uh-oh! Watch CBS’s sneak peek video for “What About the Big Girls” above.

‘Survivor 43’ deleted scene: Ryan reveals why he chose to fish instead of scramble for votes [Watch]
Viewers of “Survivor 43” Episode 8 saw Ryan Medrano spending his time prior to tribal council fishing instead of scrambling for votes. As it turns out, he was completely unaware of the fact that he was *thisclose* to being voted out on Wednesday night. We now know a bit more about why the 25-year-old warehouse associate from El Paso, Texas chose to fish so much, as revealed in CBS’s “Survivor 43” deleted scene (watch above). And it’s all thanks to his late grandfather.
“I thought fish would be nice,” Ryan explains to the camera. “My muscles — I feel them fatiguing over the things we’ve eaten. We need protein, and fish is something that gets people excited.” After spending hours in the ocean, he was able to bring back 21 fish for his fellow tribe members to devour.

Wednesday’s eighth episode of “Survivor 43” was largely defined by the merged tribe of players all wanting to work together to make an unanimous decision. Read her “Survivor 43” exit interview below.

Following the trajectory of seasons 41 and 42, “Survivor 43” enters the home stretch of the game this Wednesday when the final 11 players will begin voting each other out and onto the jury. Only three players will sit in the final seats at the last tribal council, meaning eight others will take their place on the jury that decides the winner. This stage of the game is defined by individual immunity, trust in what alliance you’ve built, who plays what advantage when, and padding your résumé with jury-impressing moves.
