In the six-part drama, Spall will play a detective who returns to the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen to lead an investigation into the death of a child, in a community he had failed previously.
The series is set in a tight-knit community precariously nestled between towering mountains and a fast-encroaching sea that threatens its very existence. Per the synopsis: “As a once-in-a-generation storm begins to gather far out at sea, former detective-turned-teacher Jackie Ellis [Reilly] discovers the body of her eight-year-old pupil, Cefin, seemingly drowned. A dinner party devolves into a bloodbath in this stylish, slow-burn Welsh language horror from debut director Lee Haven Jones. Fair warning: The Feast is not the kind of movie about a feast that will make you hungry afterwards. Indeed, eating beforehand might not be a good idea either.
Set in the present day, the film centres on a wealthy family preparing for a dinner party at their stylish, ultra-modern home in the Welsh countryside. As the film begins, mother Glenda (Nia Roberts) is relaxing in her purpose-built meditation chamber, her corrupt politician husband Gwyn (Julian Lewis Jones) is out trying to shoot rabbits, while her sons Guto (Steffan Cennydd) and Gweirydd (Siôn Alun Davies) are getting high and obsessively training for a triathalon,...

Cannibalism, torture, gory sex and meaty subtexts are all on the menu at a dinner party held by an arrogant local MP
Set and shot in Wales, with dialogue in Welsh (apart from a few loan words from English and the occasional Anglo-Saxon cuss), this is a striking, reasonably original wodge of folk horror. It also represents an auspicious first feature for director Lee Haven Jones (he’s shot a few Doctor Who episodes and the like), working from a script by writer-producer Roger Williams. Said screenplay adroitly incorporates meaty subtexts about class and generational tension, the evils of contemporary land management, and sexual abuse, while still ensuring there’s plenty of screen time devoted to cannibalism, torture and very gory forms of sex.

Lee Haven Jones’ slow-burn eco-horror The Feast may feature extended conversations around the dinner table about wealth inequality and the ecological damage of mining environmental resources. But behind a polished aesthetic and explicit metaphor about mother nature’s revenge lies an assured gross-out flick—featuring more than one scene in which vomit becomes a central ingredient of a farm-to-table dish—that announces the first-time feature director as one to watch. Subdued and formalistic for the first two-thirds of the film before, very literally, taking the camera off the tripod for a particularly gory finale, The Feast may test one’s patience but, for those willing to embrace these Welsh-film’s eccentricities, Jones has crafted one of the more horrifying dinner parties this side of The Invitation.

Whether films are set or filmed in Wales, the country and its ability to naturally bring eeriness to the screen thanks to its downcast weather have helped bring to life horror staples like The Old Dark House, The Wolf Man, and An American Werewolf in London. More often than not, you can find these titles on lists of the best horror films, and director Lee Haven Jones and writer Roger Williams throw their hat in the ring with a Welsh horror film of their own. The Feast is a parable of greed that acts as a warning of what could come if we don’t end the exploitation of the land. Themes centering on the environment and the climate crisis are ever-increasing in film, and it hits differently through the lens of horror, as it can more freely convey terrifying truths and present the consequences of actions in a violent,...

Taking “eat the rich” to literal extremes that Luis Buñuel only dreamed of (and famously lamented omitting from “The Exterminating Angel”), Lee Haven Jones’ “The Feast” is a severe Welsh-language horror romp so unsubtle about its class allegory that it might as well pre-chew the human flesh it eventually mama-birds into your mouth. Anyone grossed out by that visual should probably steer clear of the film itself, as . Of course, the rest of you sickos have stomached enough slop over the years to know that a degree of obviousness can be a good thing when it comes to certain fare, just as it can when it comes to certain meals; after all, is the joy of eating a cheeseburger not that every bite reminds you that you’re eating a cheeseburger? That it frees your mind to relish the ketchup?

By the time Zack Snyder and those around him are done releasing deleted content from Justice League, there’ll be no need for the director’s cut. Actually, who am I kidding, there will always be a need for a Snyder cut. Even if it’s as “unwatchable” as the executives say, fans are willing to dive into anything that’ll rinse that 2017 family-friendly debacle from their eyes, right?
I’m not going to bore you with the details as to why we need to be petitioning DC and Warner Bros. to release the Snyder cut of Justice League. After all, odds are, if you’re reading this, you already know the convoluted story, so let’s jump right in, shall we?
If you’ve been following Snyder on any of his social media accounts lately – especially Vero – you’ll know that he’s been relentless in his pursuit to...

Last time we had our beady little eyes on Henry Cavill’s Superman he was being buried six feet under after, presumed dead. But thanks to a post-credit scene a sign of life was witnessed from the hulking Man of Steel, and with newly released promo art for Justice League featuring Superman it’s pretty much a done deal, he will be back.

Last night saw Sky One’s new comedy drama Stella debut on the telebox. The brainchild of Gavin and Stacey star and co-writer Ruth Jones sees her play the lead role of Stella, a divorced mother of three in her early forties struggling to make sense of her life in the Welsh Valleys. With her youth a distant memory and her life heading no where Stella looks to make a few changes and get some fun out of her life before its all over.
Along for the ride are her youngest son, Ben (Justin Davies), daughter Emma (Catrin Stewart), her eldest and imprisoned son Luke (Craig Gallivan) as well as her best friend Paula (Elizabeth Berrington) and brother Dai (Owen Teale). The usual parent-child struggles occur as Emma wants to quit school and her father, Karl (Julian Lewis Jones) and his tart of a girlfriend Nadine (Karen Paullada) encourage her.

Channing Tatum puts on his best Maximus face for his role as Roman soldier Marcus Aquila in a quest to restore his family's honor in The Eagle . an adventure set in the mountains of Scotland following the disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion. Based on Rosemary Sutcliff.s classic novel The Eagle of the Ninth (which I haven.t read), the film features a screenplay from Jeremy Brock (The Last King of Scotland and Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown) and was directed by Kevin Macdonald (State of Play). Along with Tatum, the film stars Jamie Bell, Julian Lewis Jones, Denis O'Hare, Mark Strong and the great Donald Sutherland. The film opens with a quick history of Rome and how...

This is the Pure Movies review of Invictus, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Tony Kgoroge, Patrick Mofokeng, Matt Stern and Julian Lewis Jones. “I am the master of my fate/I am the captain of my soul.” The last two lines of Henley’s famous “Invictus”, the poem that Nelson Mandela kept on a scrap of paper during his incarceration at Robben Island, do well to sum up Clint Eastwood’s latest film of the same name. Morgan Freeman stars as Mandela, and addresses the challenges he faced in a post-Apartheid South Africa still largely divided by race and class. Matt Damon plays Springboks captain Francois Pienaar who is desperate to build the moral and confidence of his team in the run-up to the 1995 Rugby World Cup, knowing their chances are slim.

Chicago – It’s difficult to imagine an awards season without Clint Eastwood. Ever since 2003’s “Mystic River,” he’s released all of his directorial efforts during the last months of the year. Sometimes his films deserve to be contenders (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Letters From Iwo Jima”), and sometimes they don’t. “Invictus” is Eastwood’s most unimaginative Oscar bait yet.
Morgan Freeman is the perfect actor to play Nelson Mandela…too perfect, in fact. There must be countless great actors, unknown to mainstream moviegoers, who could’ve knocked this role out of the park. Freeman is certainly one of our great actors, but he’s played this type of wise, contemplative, larger-than-life role so often that it’s become a cliché. When he played God in “Bruce Almighty,” the casting seemed inevitable. That may be why Mandela himself couldn’t think of any actor to play himself onscreen, other than Freeman.
