Moana 2 is off to a record-breaking start at the box office. The film has had one of the biggest openings for an animated feature and has already established its name among the highest-grossers of the year.

The movie is a sequel to the 2016 Disney hit Moana and continues the journey of the titular girl from Polynesia, who teams up with the demigod Maui to break the curse on the Motufetu island. It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. Following up the arrival of Wicked Part One and Gladiator II at the box office right before Thanksgiving is a feat in and of itself, but following a beloved first feature installment gave Moana 2 even more of a wave to surmount.

Directors Dana Ledoux Miller, Jason Hand and David G. Derrick Jr. navigated these high expectations as well as the transformation of the sequel film into a movie from what was originally supposed to be a television series.

In the below interview, the three directors unpack the process of changing medium, how they wanted to expand on Moana’s story and new faces and layers to the both Moana (voiced by Auli’I Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson).

Deadline: My first question for all three of you is, could you talk about, I guess, instead of maybe expanding, you had to narrow down the plot from the TV show what that process was like?...

For once, the top 10 movies on iTunes and Fandango aren’t close to a mirror image of each other. “Conclave” (Focus) and “Terrifier 3” (Cineverse), both successful October releases that exceeded theatrical expectations, were released on PVOD last week. They had the same availability yet vastly different results.

Edward Berger’s top award-contending “Conclave” took an immediate top spot at iTunes from its first day, yet is only #8 for the full-week in the Fandango top 10. Damien Leone’s “Terrifier 3” leads at Fandango, yet only briefly appeared during the week at iTunes (debuting at #3) before dropping off the list. It currently ranks #14.

The two charts can vary, but mainly in cases of different pricing. Fandango ranks by revenue accrued for a title, while iTunes goes by transactions. Moana 2 is enjoying a historic adventure at the box office, where it has shattered record after record since its launch Thanksgiving eve.

Heading into the holiday, Walt Disney Animation’s sequel was tracking to open to an already huge $125 million to $135 million for the long five-day weekend (Wednesday-Sunday). However, the music-infused family film served up a magical $225 million for the five days, including $139.7 for the three-day weekend, thanks to the pent-up demand to witness the continued adventures of the fearless Moana, voiced once again by Auli’i Cravalho, and the demigod Maui, likewise voiced again by Dwayne Johnson. Final numbers are up from Sunday’s five-day estimate of $221 million and three-day estimate of $135.5 million.

Monday Update with Moana 2 actuals: Now that Sunday’s actuals are in, Disney’s Moana 2 has surfed even higher across its launch frame domestically, swelling the global start to $389M. That’s a new milestone as Disney confirmed the phenom has posted the highest ever reported animated opening weekend at the global box office, overtaking the previous record held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

We understand that Dis didn’t call out the record yesterday because the studio wanted to wait until the actuals were tallied, particularly given there were no holidays overseas and that estimates were dependent on family weekend play.

International came in slightly lower than estimated, at $163.8M, but this has not affected the host of Moana 2 milestones (see below for the weekend roundup).

Previous, Sunday: Disney’s Moana 2 has shattered expectations with a $386.3M global opening.

In a Thanksgiving feast for the ages, movie ticket sales hit an all-time holiday high at the domestic box office, led by Walt Disney Animation’s instant mega-hit Moana 2.

Disney’s fantasy musical served up a mammoth holiday domestic debut of $225.2 million, according to final numbers (that’s up from Sunday’s estimate of $221 million). Smashing numerous records, the Moana sequel boasts the biggest five-day debut in history — besting The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($204.6 million) — as well as delivering both the top Thanksgiving opening of all time and the biggest Thanksgiving gross of all time by a mile, beating Frozen ($93.6 million) and Frozen II ($125 million). And its three-day weekend haul of $139.7 million is the biggest opening ever for a Walt Disney Animation title.

Overseas, Moana 2 sailed to $165.8 million — Sunday’s estimate was $165.3 million — for a global start of $389 million to boast the biggest global launch of all time...

As 2024 comes to a close, much of the month will be dedicated to wrapping up the year in cinema with a plethora of year-end features (bookmark here for those), but let’s take a deeper look at the December line-up. Featuring some of the most-praised films of the year, including my favorite shortest and longest works, and much more, it’s a great time for holiday movie-going.

We should note also that a number of notable films are getting Oscar-qualifying runs before the end of the year, which we’ll feature on this in proper when they get their official releases.

It was another record-breaking weekend at the UK and Ireland box office as Moana 2 sailed to the top with a £12m debut for Disney.

The sequel had the third-highest opening of the year, behind last week’s Wicked (£13.7m) and Deadpool & Wolverine (£12.6m) but was ahead of fellow Disney animation Inside Out 2 which scored an £11.3m debut back in June.

With “Moana 2,” Disney’s Wednesday-opening animated sequel leading the way with a $221 million five-day total, U.S./Canada theaters saw attendance that came close to the highest for the holiday this century. That’s about the biggest boost for the health of the theatrical-release model since Covid-related theater closures.

The three-day weekend total of over $272 million fell just short of best for the year (that came with “Deadpool & Wolverine” opening in late July), but the $150 million for Wednesday and Thursday made for a five-day total of $420 million, unseen (adjusted) since the same period in 2012. That year, seven films grossed over $20 million (about $32 million at current ticket prices), compared to three this year.

As a result, year to date domestic box office totals have now dropped to below seven percent behind 2023. That’s a big improvement, aided by a comparison to last Thanksgiving (which was only $173 million). We may see 2024 reach $8.5 billion,...

Ticket sales for the animated family film stand as the second-biggest worldwide opening of the year after Disney’s billion-dollar Marvel behemoth “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($438 million). The sequel to 2016’s musical hit “Moana” got a jumpstart on the weekend by landing in North American theaters on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. The follow-up film generated $300.8 million globally over the traditional weekend.

At the domestic box office, “Moana 2” shattered Thanksgiving box office records with $221 million over the five-day holiday frame, overtaking the high watermark set by 2019’s “Frozen II” ($125 million). Overseas, the second “Moana” installment powered to No. 1 in every market aside from China (where a local title reigned supreme). Top-earning territories were France with $18.8 million, the United Kingdom with $15.5 million, Mexico with $11.1 million, Germany with $10.5 million, Italy with $9.3 million and Korea with $9.1 million.

This summer, they had back-to-back smashes with Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, and now Moana 2 just set a Thanksgiving record, making a jaw-dropping $135.5 million and $221 million over the five-day holiday according to Deadline. Yowza. That’s a crazy number for a movie that was retrofitted from a streaming series into a feature film and quite a turnaround for a company that was in the dog house in 2023 following a series of pricey flops.

Sunday Update: With a five-day domestic debut of $221 million, “Moana 2” shattered numerous box office records including the biggest five-day opening of all time (surpassing “Super Mario Bros. Movie”/$204.6 million), the biggest Thanksgiving debut and Thanksgiving weekend (3-day and 5-day), the biggest Thanksgiving day, and the biggest Black Friday ever. The Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving weekend, and Black Friday totals for “Moana 2” surpass records previously set by “Frozen II.” “Wicked” continued flying high as well, taking in $117.5 million over the five-day holiday weekend, followed by “Gladiator II” with $44 million, “Red One” with $18.7 million, and “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” with $4.9 million.

The movie smashed box office records in its opening weekend, opening with a 5-day domestic debut of $221 million, via Disney.

The movie broke the record for the biggest 5-day opening of all time, the biggest Thanksgiving debut and Thanksgiving weekend (3-day and 5-day), the biggest Thanksgiving day, and the biggest Black Friday ever.

The film reunites Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) three years later for an expansive new voyage, opening with $165 million internationally, bringing its global haul to $386 million so far, the second biggest global debut of 2024.

Up on Variety about a year ago, there was an interesting interview with the German distributor of the Expendables and John Wick movies. Fred Kogel, who runs Leonine Studios, noted that all the top action heroes now, Keanu Reeves, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise, and Harrison Ford, are the same ones we had in the eighties and nineties. But with Stallone and Ford in their late seventies, who will be the new action stars when the icons are done with the genre? Liam Neeson’s action career can’t go on forever, and Bruce Willis has, sadly, had to retire. For his part, Kogel doesn’t believe distributors and studios have done enough to build up a new crop of action heroes, noting that for the older stars, there was “a great deal of identification with the type of the actor, with the physicality of the actor so that you could relate to that.

Dwayne Johnson is a star and one of the biggest ones in Hollywood. The Rock is proving his star power at the box office, as his film Red One is beating Leonardo DiCaprio and his film Killer of the Flower Moon in the United States. Killers of the Flower Moon was released in 2023. It was co-produced and directed by Martin Scorsese and starred one of his favorites, Leonardo DiCaprio, in the leading role. The film also featured Rober De Niro and Lily Gladstone alongside Leo as part of the lead cast. The supporting cast included Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser. As far as the box office is concerned, this year's Thanksgiving holiday frame is the best Thanksgiving holiday frame ever. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Disney animated musical adventure "Moana 2" is leading a busy slate of blockbusters -- including "Gladiator II" and "Wicked" -- to the Thanksgiving holiday's biggest total box office take in history: more than $425 million in ticket sales from all the big screen movie offerings. That will smash through the previous Thanksgiving record, bringing theaters some much-needed relief after a rough 2024.

Half of that momentous box office total is coming from "Moana 2" alone. The sequel blew past last week's box office projections of a $125-135 million five-day debut and is now set to almost double that with a $215-220 million opening. Up until now the biggest Thanksgiving start of all time was "Frozen II" with $125 million, but "Moana 2" has left that record in the dust.

Ever since Red One hit the theatres, Dwayne Johnson has been on a roller coaster ride. While Moana 2 is turning out to be a major success, making this Thanksgiving one of the most successful in history when it comes to movies.

On the other side of the spectrum though, the grass isn’t as green. Weeks before the Disney animated flick began its theatrical venture, The Rock was already being derided by detractors around the world for the abysmal failure of the Jk Simmons starrer, a movie which was being billed as one of the biggest for this year. The result? Voices have begun to clamor for putting The Rock out of action.

Update: Black Friday delivered an estimated $109M, the best ever for the day after Thanksgiving. The day stands as the second best moviegoing day stateside Ytd after July 26’s $118.3M. As we told you, Disney’s Moana 2 scored the best take for a title playing on Black Friday with $54.5M. Wicked scored $32M yesterday, the third best take ever for a movie on Black Friday after Frozen 2 ($34.1M). Gladiator II did $12.4M yesterday, up 87% from its Thanksgiving $6.7M take. All titles yesterday were up 88% over Thanksgiving’s $58M take.

At the time of this post, there isn’t a wait time for online ticket purchases on the AMC website. The circuit’s Boss Adam Aron is a happy camper, declaring that “Americans are pouring into theaters” for what is a “national phenomenon.”

Saturday Update: With over-performance in all corners, Disney’s Moana 2 is now eyeing a global opening of $370M+ through Sunday. Anything but a turkey, domestic‘s super-charged Thanksgiving frame is looking at $215M-$220M, while the international box office is expected to ride a wave past $150M. Through Friday, the worldwide cume is $192.7M.

As we noted yesterday (see below), it’s important to recall that without holidays overseas, weekend play is key for the sequel. Based on results through Friday, signs are pointing upwards.

Friday added a further nine offshore markets, including the U.K., Spain and China, taking the full total to 48 material markets to date. Through Friday, the international running total is $52.7M. That’s an estimated 185% ahead of the first Moana on a like-for-like basis.

The theatres are busy with some of the biggest movies of the year, from Gladiator II to Wicked and now Moana 2. Dwayne Johnson’s Red One opened with mixed reviews and could be said to be the weakest among the lot, yet it is performing well at the box office in North America. It has now beaten Ridley Scott’s Napoleon’s domestic haul with its Thanksgiving Day collection. Scroll below for more.
