At an early age, he began performing in the Mangueira samba school's percussion section. Later, he took up the cavaquinho (a small, 4-stringed guitar), and became a singer.
He was an important figure in Rio's most traditional samba school, Mangueira. He was their lead singer for many Carnival parades from the 1950s onward.
