- DirectorJung Bum-shikStarsOh Ah-yeonWi Ha-joonYoo Je-YoonThe crew of a horror web series travels to an abandoned asylum for a live broadcast. It soon encounters much more than expected as it moves deeper inside the nightmarish old building.Day 1
I've always heard that this is one of the scariest movies ever made, so I was pretty excited to watch it. But I gotta say, apart from one pretty gonzo scene that I won't spoil, it didn't really do much for me. I watched this in pitch-black in the dead of night for the full effect, and even then, a lot of the first hour was pretty dull with a lot of time consisting of the characters wandering around the titular haunted asylum just goofing around. And I love slow-burn horror, don't get me wrong, but this just wasn't it. The movie's only 90 minutes, but even then, it felt like a lot of it could have been cut out, and not much would've been lost. But if you have some friends around, especially if some of them hate horror movies, this would probably be a pretty fun watch.
5/10 - DirectorHarry Bromley DavenportStarsPhilip SayerBernice StegersDanny BraininAn alien creature impregnates a woman who gives birth to a man who was abducted by aliens three years ago. The man reconnects with his wife and son for a sinister purpose.Day 2
This is a weird gross little movie that, honestly, isn't very good, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It's kind of a cross between Alien and The Shining with a little bit of Invasion of the Body Snatchers but with a nasty body horror flair that made it enjoyable enough to hold my attention, and that's not even getting into the kid's clown sidekick. If you want a gross icky gooey alien movie, check it out!
5/10 - DirectorScott SchirmerStarsGavin BrownEthan PhilbeckPhyllis MunroA horror-obsessed boy discovers his older brother is a serial killer.Day 3
The concept for this movie is great, a kid finds out his brother is a serial killer and wants to figure out what caused him to start killing. Sounds interesting right? But the writing is so overly serious and moody that it just comes off as laughable. You can tell whilst watching that the writer wanted to say something about the effects of violent movies on children, but the movie just gives up on that in its own attempts at cheap violence that serves no purpose other than shock value. And spoilers, that's not even what motivates the brother to murder people, turns out that he's just a racist. So the entire story up to that point served no purpose whatsoever. And the movie wraps up with more cheap gore just because the film needs to end at some point.
2/10 - DirectorDon ManciniStarsChantal QuesnelleFiona DourifJordan GavarisAfter her mother's mysterious death, Nica begins to suspect that Chucky may be the key to recent bloodshed and chaos.Day 4
Even though I love the Child's Play movies, I hadn't seen the two latest entries in the series so I thought why not watch them for this? and this one...was pretty good! It's not as good as the first 3 but it's got some fun kills and Brad Douriff is always great as Chucky. Not much more to say about it than that, check it out!
6/10 - DirectorDon ManciniStarsAllison Dawn DoironAlex VincentBrad DourifChucky returns to terrorize his human victim, Nica. Meanwhile, the killer doll has some scores to settle with his old enemies, with the help of his former wife.Day 5
Cult of Chucky! The latest movie in the series and, maybe the worst? Seed of Chucky is similarly awful, but at least it has some fun moments, this movie is just mean and gross. It follows Nica from the last film being sent to a mental institution and Chucky breaking in to finish the job. All of the main characters are just terrible stereotypes of mentally ill people, and they're killed off in such uncreative and un-fun scenarios (they literally repeat a Kill from Bride of Chucky) that it's just like, what's the point? And don't even get me started on the ending. Right as something interesting starts happening, the movie ends! It felt more like a cliffhanger for a TV show than the ending of a movie
3/10 - DirectorRob JabbazStarsBerant ZhuRegina LeiYing-Ru ChenA young couple trying to reunite amid a city ravaged by a plague that turns its victims into deranged, bloodthirsty sadists.Day 6
On the surface, this is one of the most disgusting, depraved movies I've ever seen. It's about a couple who get separated during a zombie-esque outbreak and have to find their way back to each other with litres of blood and viscera along the way. But under that layer of grime is a really fascinating film about violence and how it can spread through a population through distrust and misinformation. And I think that's only exemplified through how the virus spreads which, unlike most zombie movies, isn't through direct contact with the infected but rather through bearing witness to their violent crimes. I was also shocked to learn that this was written and directed by a man because it has some pretty major feminist themes with one of the main plot points revolving around how a majority of men expect women's time and affection regardless of what women actually want. That said, I would definitely look up a trigger guide before watching since this is absolutely not for the faint of heart.
7/10 - DirectorWilliam Peter BlattyStarsGeorge C. ScottEd FlandersBrad DourifA police lieutenant uncovers more than he bargained for as his investigation of a series of murders, which have all the hallmarks of the deceased Gemini serial killer, leads him to question the patients of a psychiatric ward.Day 7
The Exorcist III is almost as good as the first original, and that's about as big of a compliment as I can give it. But unlike the original, the definite standout of this film is the character-writing and acting. Namely, George C. Scott's overworked and underappreciated Lieutenant Kinderman makes this movie what it is to the point where this is almost more of a character study of Kinderman rather than a horror movie. But there's still a lot of horror to be found with Brad Dourif's terrifying Gemini Killer being the definite highlight.
8/10 - DirectorNatalie Erika JamesStarsRobyn NevinEmily MortimerBella HeathcoteA daughter, mother and grandmother are haunted by a manifestation of dementia that consumes their family's home.Day 8
This is a really difficult movie to write about because a lot of what happens is more symbolic than literal. The film tells the story of three generations of women and how they're all affected by the grandmother's worsening dementia. Unfortunately, a lot of what the movie tries to do doesn't really work for me, with quite long stretches of film having not much happening with most of the interesting stuff being saved for the last 20 minutes. That said, the last 20 minutes are very effective with a creepy, dreadful atmosphere throughout.
4/10 - DirectorBen KetaiStarsBrent BriscoeKurt CaceresEric EtebariA crew of coal miners becomes trapped 600 feet below ground after a disastrous collapse. As the air grows more toxic and time runs out, they slowly descend into madness and begin to turn on one another.Day 9
It's easy to write about a good movie, it's easy to write about a bad movie, it's hard to write about a boring movie and this might be one of the most boring horror movies I've ever seen. It's an incredibly by-the-numbers movie about some people getting trapped in a cave. Some of them go mad, or maybe they don't, it's hard to tell because it's very dark. 'Nuff said!
3/10 - DirectorCan EvrenolStarsMehmet CerrahogluGörkem KasalErgun KuyucuA squad of unsuspecting cops go through a trapdoor to Hell when they stumble upon a Black Mass in an abandoned building.Day 10
This is a Turkish movie and it was pretty good! It has this really interesting dreamy feel that carries it through to the meat of the film, in which a group of cops stumble upon a black mass and are promptly captured and tortured. Unfortunately, from there the movie just devolves into needless shock value and loses the dream-like elements that made the first half so interesting. But, overall it was still entertaining enough.
6/10 - DirectorGiulio De SantiStarsRayner BourtonMichael HoweJessica CarrollAssigned the easy task of assassinating a couple in a hotel room, instead, a hardened contract killer finds himself fighting for his life in a maze-like place crammed with demonic henchmen. Can he escape from the nightmarish Hotel Inferno?Day 11
This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, and that's not intentional. The entire film is filmed in first person and is about a hitman who is sent to a hotel to kill someone, but the hotel is actually full of demons or something. But the thing that makes it so entertaining is the awful voice acting of the main character, for some reason, he's dubbed by someone whose accent shifts from Stan Lee to Arnold Schwarzenegger to Vinesauce Joel and back again. The only problem with the movie is...everything else. Even though, our lead is supposedly on the back foot the entire film, every villain is dispatched pretty much immediately with the main character just shooting them or smacking them and then watching blood spray everywhere. It's probably a lot more enjoyable if you get some friends and maybe partake in certain substances before watching.
3/10 - DirectorKevin KoStarsHsuan-yen TsaiSin-Ting HuangYing-Hsuan KaoSix years ago, Li Ronan was cursed after breaking a religious taboo. Now, she must protect her daughter from the consequences of her actions.Day 12
This movie follows a mother trying to save her daughter after she broke a religious taboo six years prior. It has an amazingly creepy atmosphere throughout and a lot of great scares. It's also a very emotional tale that got me choked up more than once. But my favourite part was how the movie used the found footage genre to play with the audience, with the main character talking directly to the viewer and teaching them how to recite the titular incantation.
8/10 - DirectorRichard FranklinStarsTerence StampElisabeth ShueSteven FinchWhen a female zoology student is invited to a remote seaside mansion to assist a primatology professor with his experiments involving chimpanzees, dangerous events start to occur, all involving the intelligent 45-year-old chimp, Link.Day 13
Have you ever wanted a slasher movie starring an evil Orangutan? Then have, I got the movie for you! Elizabeth Shue plays a zoology student who becomes the assistant to a professor experimenting on chimps and that stuff's alright, you see the monkeys doing chores around the house and other cute little things. But the real star of the show is Link, he's a cigar-smoking, suit-wearing chimpanzee who turns on his human masters and rampages around the professor's mansion causing mayhem, eventually killing everyone in the building, ripping out a gas line, lighting a cigar and blowing up the entire house! Overall, yeah it's pretty fun.
6/10 - DirectorYôhei FukudaStarsAtsushi IshinoShôichi MatsudaSanae TsukamotoA young man gets hooked on a website called "Death Tube," which broadcasts actual murders in real time. At first he doesn't believe it is real, until he is brought into the site itself. The killing game is about to begin.Day 14
A decently entertaining Japanese Saw knockoff with a group of people being kidnapped and forced to compete in bizarre challenges lest they be tortured and killed live on the internet! Yep, it's a Saw ripoff but a decently entertaining one. The best part of the movie by far is the organizer of the games, a guy in a bear costume who treats the whole thing like a twisted kid's show, cracking jokes and dancing around the entire time. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie isn't anything to write home about; the acting isn't great, the effects are super cheap, and the writing is pretty bad. It's a mixed bag.
5/10 - DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsMia FarrowJohn CassavetesRuth GordonA young couple trying for a baby moves into an aging, ornate apartment building on Central Park West, where they find themselves surrounded by peculiar neighbors.Day 15
I don't know if it's just because I've watched a lot of crap recently but this is one of the best movies I've watched in a long time. Of course, it's a classic, but it's always nice to know that a movie deserves the recognition it's given. The only complaints I can really think of are nitpicks and some dull moments here and there but overall it's basically perfect. I'd recommend it to anyone for an extremely suspenseful, genuinely frightening film.
9/10 - DirectorBanjong PisanthanakunStarsNarilya GulmongkolpechSawanee UtoommaSirani YankittikanA horrifying story of a shaman's inheritance in the Isan region of Thailand. What could be possessing a family member might not be the Goddess they make it out to be.Day 16
The Medium is tricky to figure out because, on the one hand, it's a fascinating film about family tradition and Thai culture with some great scares and a foreboding atmosphere. But, on the other hand, it's not that engaging, some of the characters are annoying, and the mockumentary set-up is pretty contrived. But if you want a genuinely creepy ghost story, give it a watch!
7/10 - DirectorGuy MagarStarsRobert WightmanPriscilla BarnesSeason HubleyThat psycho stepfather has escaped from the insane asylum and had his face surgically altered. Now he's married again, this time to a woman with a child in a wheelchair. He goes on a killing spree once again.Day 17
The Stepfather is one of my favourite horror movies and last year I watched the awful second film so thought, why not finish the trilogy this year? This is one of the lamest movies I've ever seen in my life. It's essentially a remake of the first film but with all of the interesting bits taken out. The only part worth mentioning is the climax, where the stepfather finally flips and tries to kill his new wife and son only for the son, who was been in a wheelchair the entire movie, to regain the use of his legs and run in to save the day. Just watch that scene on Youtube or something and skip this crap.
2/10 - DirectorJaume Collet-SerraStarsVera FarmigaPeter SarsgaardIsabelle FuhrmanA husband and wife who recently lost their baby adopt a 9-year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she appears.Day 18
This is a pretty entertaining psychological horror, that I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would considering I already knew the twist going in. The clear standout is Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther, who is such a horrible little creep that you can't wait for her to get what's coming to her. Of course, it's not perfect, it takes the husband wayyyyy too long to figure out what's happening. But it's still pretty good, if you somehow haven't seen it, you should watch it.
7/10 - DirectorTony WashStarsRachel MelvinShenae Grimes-BeechJoey BicicchiBrother and sister, Ben and Ashley, reunite 20 years after the murder of their parents to face the cause of their parents' death, a supernatural creature known as The Rake.Day 19
I don't want to write about this...it was so bad. I suspected that going in considering it's based on a creepypasta but, I didn't know it would be THAT bad. I thought it would at least have a guy in a big rubber monster suit cutting people up but, they made the Rake into a virus that makes people crazy and think they see the Rake? It think? It's not really clear. So most of the movie is just boring people talking about boring things and then some of them die and then it just ends.
1/10 - DirectorAlfred SoleStarsLinda MillerMildred ClintonPaula E. SheppardIn 1961, divorced Catholic couple Dom and Catherine Spages' life is upended when their teenage daughter Alice is suspected of her younger sister Karen's brutal murder during her First Holy Communion and a series of stabbings follow.Day 20
This is one of the rare movies I like more the more I think about it. It has that creepy daytime horror that many 70's movies have and some horrifying death scenes, I really enjoyed the relationships between the small cast of characters, it felt like they were actual people rather than just characters that only exist in this movie. But, the main thing I'm conflicted about is the twist. |SPOILERS| I appreciate that they revealed it about two-thirds but, the old woman's motives were kind of weak, I think it would've been stronger overall if Alice was actually the killer. Also, this is a nitpick but, Alice's voice was very distracting because she's clearly an adult.
7/10 - DirectorZack SnyderStarsSarah PolleyVing RhamesMekhi PhiferA nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.Day 21
I know this is seen as a classic in the zombie genre, but I don't get it. The thing that makes a good zombie movie is the characters, but, I just didn't care enough about anyone in this movie. The stand-out was probably Ving Rahmes but still, he was just the one-note badass. There's at least some fun zombie violence and weird freaky moments à la the zombie baby. Also, I don't know if I should add or take away points for the Richard Cheese song.
5/10 - DirectorVictor ZarcoffStarsNeville ArchambaultSean CarriganPJ McCabeA newlywed couple, move into a new house across the country, only to find out that their marital issues are the least of their problems. Unbeknownst to them, their grim and lascivious landlord has been spying on them from day one.Day 22
You ever watch a movie that you enjoy but just don't have much to say about it? That's what this was, I enjoyed the characters and it had some good scary moments of the creepy landlord skulking about but that's about it. Although saying that, the ending felt very rushed and like a obvious set up for a sequel. So good, not great.
6/10 - DirectorAdam MasonStarsAndrew HowardPollyanna RoseOlivia HillWith a pocketful of drugs, Nick West takes out his girlfriend Sammy, for a good time. When they explore an abandoned asylum, the discovery of a bizarre device, a cross between an electric chair and sadistic fetish machine, transforms drugged-out bliss into agony and despair. After Sammy is brutally assaulted and murdered by unseen forces, Nick becomes the number-one suspect. Years pass and Nick, who had been locked up in a mental hospital, is released into the care of eminent psychiatrist Dr. Willard, who is hell-bent on exposing the truth behind the killing. Accompanied by Dr. Willard and several of his students, Nick returns to the scene of the crime. However, the decrepit asylum hides a blood-drenched secret.Day 23
I never thought a movie could be so pretentious. A movie about a chair possessed by a demon sounds like a fun, schlocky time, but the filmmakers take this premise and turn it into a deconstruction of the horror genre, or at least try to. Unfortunately, they chose the most obnoxious main character I've ever seen. It's as if Chev Chelios from Crank was in a horror movie and was about ten times more annoying. He has this awful narration all the way through commenting directly to the audience about what's happening and then the movie has the nerve to pull a last-second twist out of its ass and act as if it's some clever reveal when it's just embarrassing. At least Matt Berry was there so it wasn't a complete waste of time.
1/10 - DirectorRobert WieneStarsWerner KraussConrad VeidtFriedrich FeherHypnotist Dr. Caligari uses a somnambulist, Cesare, to commit murders.Day 24
- DirectorShozin FukuiStarsHaji SuzukiOnn-chanKôji ÔtsuboPinocchio 964, a lobotomised cyborg sex slave, is abandoned by his owners due to his inability to maintain an erection, while the corporate entity plans to kill him.Day 25
if you want an hour and a half of people screaming and being covered in various liquids, this is the movie for you!
