  • At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1964)

    1. At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul

    19641h 24m
    6.9 (4.2K)
A gravedigger prowls the city in search of a female to bear him a son.
DirectorJosé Mojica MarinsStarsJosé Mojica MarinsMagda MeiNivaldo Lima
This movie is considered by many as the starting point of Brazilian horror cinema. Coffin Joe (Zé do Caixão) became a famous character in the years that followed. He was very popular up until recent years. A north-american remake is on its way, produced by Lord of the Rings's actor Elijah Wood.
  • This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse (1967)

    2. This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse

    19671h 48m
    7.0 (2.3K)
After the events of the previous film, Coffin Joe continues to seek a maiden to give him a son. With the help of servant Bruno, he kidnaps six girls from a village. Which one of them will pass his trials of fear?
DirectorJosé Mojica MarinsStarsJosé Mojica MarinsTina WohlersNadia Freitas
Coffin Joe's original trilogy plays a lot with religious subjects, specially the catholic symbols that are huge presences in Brazilian popular culture. This film is mostly black & white, with the exception of a famous sequence once called the "Sistine Chapel of Hell" for its use of color to portray the underworld.
  • The Bloody Exorcism of Coffin Joe (1974)

    3. The Bloody Exorcism of Coffin Joe

    19741h 40m
    6.1 (362)
Director José Mojica Marins travels to spend Christmas with friends on their small farm and write the screenplay for his next film. But he observes eerie things in the house. His friends are being possessed one by one by some supernatural evil force. Soon he learns that the matriarch of the family had made a deal with local witch, Malvina, to get pregnant and save her marriage. In return, Malvina should indicate who would marry the girl. However, her daughter Vilma is engaged to her beloved fiancé, and Malvina wants her to marry Eugenio--the son of Satan. Further, José Mojica Marins discovers that his fictional creation Zé do Caixão (a.k.a. Coffin Joe) is ready to collect the souls of Vilma's family, and only an exorcism might save the doomed family.
DirectorJosé Mojica MarinsStarsJosé Mojica MarinsJofre SoaresWalter Stuart
Coffin Joe goes meta and tries to kill his creator. The filmmaker acts both as Coffin Joe and himself. (Also, it's kind of a Holiday film?!)
  • Excitation (1976)

DirectorWalter Hugo KhouriStarsPaola MorraKarin RodriguesRosina Malbouisson
It can (and it has been) described as some sort of a Brazilian Twin Peaks (but in the 70s). It's also kinda gothic and queer. Shot in Gramado, a city that is famous for being a popular tourist destination and for hosting one of the main film festivals in Brazil.

    DirectorJair CorreiaStarsJurandir AbreuCláudia AlencarElias Andreato
Known as the first (and probably the only) slasher film made in Brazil. A commentary on the political landscape of that decade - Brazil was reaching the end of a military dictatorship that lasted for more than 20 years.
  • Frankenstein Punk (1986)

The story of Frank, a different creature, born to the song "Singing in the rain", that goes in search of happiness.
    DirectorsEliana FonsecaCao HamburgerStarsRicardo BlatEliana Fonseca
AVAILABLE ON YOUTUBE! One of my personal favorites. No need for subtitles, there is no dialogue. Legend has it that it was almost nominated for a big award (probably the Oscars) but had to withdraw because they didn't have the rights for the soundtrack.
