Shivnath Choudhary lives a wealthy lifestyle in Chandanpur, India, along with his wife, Leela, and 8 year old daughter, Neena. He likes to mingle with poor folk much, especially Baiju, to the chagrin of his wife, who shuns them and only tolerates them as long as they continue to pay taxes. When Shivnath steals money to help dwellers, Leela has the huts burnt down, and forbids him from seeing Neena ever again. Hurt and confused, Shivnath flees to Bombay, where he befriends a man named Mahadev and makes some money entertaining young children, including a girl named Neena. When Neena passes away, Shivnath returns to Chandanpur only to find the village in ruins, and Rukmini, the daughter of Baiju, abducted and being held by Ramdas, Leela's Munim. Shivnath tracks Ramdas down, kills him, and is subsequently arrested and sentenced to prison for 14 years. He passes his time writing poems for Neena and hopes to see her one day when he gets released. Years later, he does get to see her in the prison yard along with her fiancé, Dr. Biren, who is the doctor attached to the prison, but finds that she loathes convicts. He hides his real identity from her, and she subsequently warms up to him and even talks with him about her dad. He also finds out that she is to be married soon. A day before her marriage, Shivnath has a stroke and is hospitalized. The next day he is told that the rest of his term has been pardoned and he is free to leave when he recovers. Shivnath insists on leaving immediately. Seriously ill, and facing the risk of being shunned by everyone will Shivnath make it to Neena's wedding in time?

Amar (Rajesh Khanna) and Prem (Prem Chopra) are college buddies, while Asha (Babita) and Shobana (Nazma) become friends. Marriages are arranged; there is a hitch. Dowry is demanded. In Prem's case his older brother, who had resolved never to ask for dowry, is constrained to do so to enable Prem to buy his air ticket to the US for higher studies. She is in love with Amar, but needs the job to help pay off a debt incurred when her father went missing, together with the payroll money he had withdrawn from the bank on behalf of his employer. Asha gamely puts up with the workplace harassment, with a hidden agenda of setting things right for Shobana's marriage. An elaborate charade ensues to teach Prem a lesson in humiliation. When he fails in seduction, is abduction the only option?

Somnath (Somu) lives in a shanty house in a Delhi slum with his widowed mom, and unmarried sister, Sarla. He is friendly with Calcutta-based wealthy Vikram (Vicky) Maharaj. When Vicky's dad, Damodar, has a heart attack and is advised to take bed-rest for two months, Vicky fills in his father's shoes, has a confrontation with a senior employee and union leader, Bipinlal Pandey, which results in a strike. His father intervenes, asks Vicky to apologize to Bipinlal, which Vicky does, and everything returns to normal. Vicky confides about his humiliation with Somu, and both conspire to teach Bipinlal a lesson. As a result, Somu accompanies Vicky to Calcutta, gets a job as a laborer in his mill, befriends his fellow-workers, gets some monetary relief to injured workers, amongst other benefits, is elected as the union leader replacing Bipinlal. With Somu as the union leader and Vicky as the boss there is no stopping these two - until Damodar finds out and decides to put a stop to Vicky being influenced by Somu's middle-class ideas and ideals. Damodar starts a chain of events that get out of control, events that may well see the death of one of the friends at the hands of the other. Will Vicky's and Somu's friendship see them through or will it also be a casualty?

He however does go for the job where he meets Mr. Rodrigues and Mr. Choudhury who are initially rude to him, but afterwards mellow down. Both these men are on the look-out for grooms for their daughters. On the first day Sharad's boss takes him to his house for lunch where he is introduced to Heena, the Boss' daughter who falls in love with him. Then he gets introduced to Mr. Rodrigues' daughter too. But Sharad is in love with Renu(Ranjeeta), his neighbour. In the factory his assistant Mr.Kote (Ashok Saraf) wants to help him get out of the trap created by Mr. Chaudhury and Rodrigues. Kote spreads the rumour that Sharad does is not of chaste character. This however creates tensions between Renu and Sharad. Mr. Chaudhury starts believing that Kote is spreading the rumours in order to win the place of his son-in-law. At this juncture Sharad introduces Renu to all of them and all tensions are resolved.
