Two families, Sebkovi and Krausovi, are celebrating Christmas, but not everyone is in a good mood. Teenage kids think their fathers are totally stupid; fathers are sure their children are nothing more than rebels, hating anything they say.

This movie is based on texts of Bohumil Hrabal, world-known Czech prosaic. It's a story (in a form of a mosaic of short episodes and pictures) about the sadness and happiness of inhabitants of Kersko (Kersko is a small woody area full of cottages and roods). These people are both simple and sensitive, they have their own pleasures (e.g. Leli is a collector of cheap, but inutile things) and the greatest delight of all of them is a hunting. Crude poetics of amateur hunting is screened by dreamy pictures of this area. Menzel mixes sentimental lyricism and rough (but not vulgar!) humor and the outcome is the never-ending landscape of continuous life in the proximate nearness of nature. The performances of actors are brilliant. Both Rudolf Hrusinsky as a Franz and Jaromír Hanzlik as a Leli have nonrecurring charm bottomed on a pain and inebriation. Only the music is not perfect: Jiri Sust usually assembled his film music from his older works and in this movie there is many quotations.

The old King (Vladimír Mensík) is not satisfied with his four children. It is high time for the Princesses to get married and for the Prince to assume the reign. Once the King sets out to the fowling and he entrusts the kingdom to the Prince Velen (Juraj Durdiak). His sisters want him to provide them with the bridegrooms. A beautiful girl Evening Star (Libuse Safránková) appears to Velen and he falls in love with her at once. Evening Star also likes Velen and therefore, for a kiss, she helps him to get married his sisters to her brothers Moonbeam, Sunbeam and Wind. After the King returns home he does not find the daughters because the bridegrooms took them right away. The angry King assigns the Prince to bring them home.

Petr's stepmother steals his inheritance. He meets a duke's daughters, falling for Adelka while the other rejects him. Petr encounters a devil, and they conspire to punish the wicked stepmother and proud daughter.

A story about a king who out of three daughters preferred two: the most beautiful and the most cheerful, and the most intelligent, and even able to cook well, he kicked out, which he later bitterly regretted.

A bittersweet comedy set just prior to 1984, during the era of 'practical socialism'. For political reasons, Bedrich Mára (Bolek Polívka) has had to give up teaching at Prague's Academy of Art. He is not allowed to exhibit and has been pushed to the sidelines of interest and lucrative commissions. He and his ceramicist wife (Eva Holubová) and two sons live in a small apartment on the outskirts of Prague. Míla Brecka (Jaroslav Dusek), the school principal, and his family stand in stark contrast to the Máras. Comrade Míla and his ambitious wife (Vilma Cibulková), Bedrich's fellow student from the Academy, have gone with the socialist flow for years. They find justification for their behavior in the usual words: 'Someones got to swim along with them to make things better; someones got to make that sacrifice!'

Couple of friend, including couples go on a dinner to one couple's flat. One of guests suggests, they should all put their phones on the table and read out loud every message they get and put every call the get on speaker. This, at the first look silly and funny games creates tension, parts of comedy and drama.

Twist of fate and the twists of mind of the characters (mostly couples) combine in just the right twinkled absurd way in the interweaving episodes of this comedy. Each of the characters gets a good shot at being sarcastic and each is a sorry loser at some point yet none is turned into the butt of the joke. The place is Prague and the time is August 6th, 1995, except for one episode, set 50 years earlier in unflyable rain in the city of Kokura, Japan.

Zuzanka (Natasa Gollová) can finally stop toiling away at washing dishes at hotel Mercur after a distant aunt has bequeathed her her own hotel - Blue Star. She proudly marches over to the luxury hotel in the center of town and immediately begins to change the personnel. Because this involves the facilities belonging to a joint-stock company, which no one can inherit, she is considered insane. It comes out that her inheritance is in reality a small, shabby little hotel of the same name in the IV town district. The personnel are three unemployed youths who in this way work off the money they owe for rent. The first guest is wealthy Vladimír Rychta Rohan (Oldrich Nový), whose parents spent their honeymoon in this very hotel. He wants to celebrate his wedding there, with which his fiancée Milada (Adina Mandlová), who is waiting for him at the luxurious Blue Star, does not concur.

An evocation of the childhood memories of Bohumil Hrabal in his provincial town of Nymburk, dominated by the local brewery.
