Hands down, this is the absolute pinnacle of car chase scenes. It was made 50 years ago, with 2 ton steel muscle cars. They had smallish disc brakes in front and drum brakes in the rear, which were almost burned up completely by the end of the chase. The 2 primary cars were driven by Bill Hickman (the best stunt driver of the era, bar none) and Steve McQueen himself doing 90% of his own driving. There were dozens of other excellent stunt drivers, including the top 6 stunt drivers in the most important cars during the chase. They had 22-30 square blocks of downtown San Francisco closed to the public, with close to 100 people with radios (1 per intersection) to keep pedestrians from wandering onto the street. Hickman and McQueen (plus a film car) reached 124 MPH; the cameraman was hanging out the window of the film car (for his dear life).
