This is the story of four German women during the Second World War. The mother Voß, her two daughters Agnes and Lisabeth, and her daughter-in-law Emmi, all live in a house on the river. They accept the war as inevitable and decide to make the best of it for themselves. Before leaving for the war, Paul gave Emmi a blouse. Agnes asks her husband Jupp, who has been stationed on the eastern front, to bring her back some fur. While the men are off at war, in a moment of weakness, Agnes succumbs to her boss's seduction. Emmi commits suicide as soon as she receives new of Paul's death. Agnes receives her Russian fur coat, but at a great price: Jupp returns disabled. When Agnes kills her intrusive boss, the mother Voß, who had up until that point put up with everything, takes the initiative. With her younger daughter Lisabeth, she liquidates the body and the Russian fur coat along with it.

Don Giulio hopes to live peacefully with his family and his friends, but discovers that many of them are depressed or frustrated, and some suicidal. Father Giulio determines to leave again, but his stopped parents convince him to perform the wedding ceremony for his friend Caesar and his fiancee. Don Giulio rushes through the ceremony and then away from Rome. Once away from the city, he immediately regains happiness.

This parody of the detective-story genre merrily detours into spoofing French foibles as well, making it more of an exercise in verbal gymnastics than a narrative with a mission. Corpses continue to pile up (not in front of the camera, however) while the two men are sidetracked by their interest in language. Given their positions, they do not want that murdered either.

And it's all going quite well until Vlado arrives - a young man who dropped out of university and came to work in the same factory Anna started work at. Ivan feels the way his wife acts with him has changed and learns about the reason why from an anonymous letter. Vlado comes to speak openly about his feelings for Anna in her home and asks her to marry him. Family crisis ensues. Has Anna been cheating on her husband or not? Should he be jealous or keep his violent rage under control? These issues come to spill over to the whole household, friends circle, colleagues... At the end, Anna finds it too hard to leave the nest and stays with Ivan.
