- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsKirk DouglasTony CurtisErnest BorgnineA slave and a Viking prince fight for the love of a captive princess. The definition of a Hollywood viking epic. Based on a novel, itself loosely based on Scandinavian legends. Through historicity is more or less thrown out of the window, there is certainly attempts at authenticity such as use of Swedish folktunes in the score, filming on location in Norway and replicating ships used by the vikings. Most of all it's a very fun film. The lead actors are clearly the time of their lives and there are some great setpieces.
- DirectorHrafn GunnlaugssonStarsJakob Þór EinarssonEdda BjörgvinsdóttirHelgi SkúlasonAn Irish man seeks vengeance against the vikings who killed his parents.Something completely different. A classic of Icelandic and Swedish cinema. Yojimbo is reimagened as a viking saga, where the yakuza is replaced with Norweigan vikings in exile in Iceland. The film is rough and uneven, but the storytelling is great and there are some great performances. Especially Helgi Skulason stands out as the cheif viking Thord. There are images that you will never forget like bloody idols of the gods, piercing blue eyes leering through a helmet and vikings riding over a black beach in the fog. One of the more historicly accurate entries on the list. The final scene is one of the bleakest moments in cinema.
- DirectorHrafn GunnlaugssonStarsReine BrynolfssonTinna GunnlaugsdóttirEgill ÓlafssonTrausti returns to Iceland just in time to be entangled in a family feud over a stranded whale-cadaver. His mother (the family head) is mortally wounded and Grim kills Erikur; the other clan leader. Isold, daughter of Erikur now takes his place. Isold and Trausti are attracted to each other, but Isold was promised to Hjoerleifur - the son of the Bishop (of Iceland) and his powerful wife. However, Isold has a plan...Probably the best viking film ever made. Tristian and Isolde is retold in Iceland at the end of the viking age. The imagery and music is beyond words. The epic landscapes of Iceland provides a nearly mythic backdrop for a blood feud between three clans. Like "When the raven flies" there are images that will never leave your memory, like the final showdown among the geysers.
- DirectorJohn McTiernanMichael CrichtonStarsAntonio BanderasDiane VenoraDennis StorhøiA man, having fallen in love with the wrong woman, is sent by the sultan himself on a diplomatic mission to a distant land as an ambassador. Stopping at a Viking village port to restock on supplies, he finds himself unwittingly embroiled in a quest to banish a mysterious threat in a distant Viking land.Althrough ridiculous at times and dubious with history, this retelling of Beowulf certainly has it's charm and an amazing score. Certainly a film that takes refuge in audacity. Suspicously few Scandinavian actors appear in the film, through Swedish acting legend Sven Wolter plays the king of the Norsemen. That certainly won over a few Scandinavians.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsMads MikkelsenMaarten StevensonAlexander MortonForced for some time to be a fighting slave, a pagan warrior escapes his captors with a boy and joins a group of Crusaders on their quest to the Holy Land.More symbolic than historical, "Valhalla Rising" is polarizing to say the least. Some hate it, others love it and some are just saying "meh". But if you are in for a Norse take on "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" and trippy Scottish scenery you are in for a treat. Suggestive from beginning to the end, the film is actually quite influential in the viking genre. The director imagened the vikings as Mad Max-esque vikings, a look which has been nabbed from a great deal of viking films since like "Hammer of the Gods", "The Berserkers", "Norsemen - A Viking Saga" and even history channels "Vikings". These films even picked up the rugged and heavily contrasted look of "Valhalla Rising".
- DirectorFarren BlackburnStarsCharlie BewleyAlexandra DowlingClive StandenA young man transforms into a brutal warrior as he travels the unforgiving landscape in search of his long lost brother, Hakan the Ferocious, whose people are relying on him to restore order to their kingdom. If "Valhalla Rising" was less subtle action film, it would probably be "Hammer of the Gods". It's really weird at times, with strange black knights(?) Danish warlord Ivar the Boneless being portrayed as overweight pedophile and people start fighting their allies for no good reason. Can't really recommend. Someone casting "Vikings" must have seen this because both actors Clive Standen and Ivan Kaye later got cast in the show. Amusingly, Kaye was casted as king Ælla, famous for being killed by Ivar the Boneless.
- CreatorMichael HirstStarsKatheryn WinnickGustaf SkarsgårdAlexander LudwigVikings transports us to the brutal and mysterious world of Ragnar Lothbrok, a Viking warrior and farmer who yearns to explore--and raid--the distant shores across the ocean. As far as history goes, this show zig-zags between really good and aweful. But it's strength lies in the drama, great acting great cinematography. A more or less loose retelling of several Norse legends, sometimes the show misses oppurtunities for some great storytelling and more drama. But the story is engaging and some spooky apperances of the Norse gods. Features some amazing music with a heavy mix of modern instruments and instruments used in the viking age. Recommended.
- StarsAlexander DreymonEliza ButterworthArnas FedaraviciusAs Alfred the Great defends his kingdom from Norse invaders, Uhtred--born a Saxon but raised by Vikings--seeks to claim his ancestral birthright. The poor man's version of "Vikings", slightly more historicly accurate, through a farcry from the extreamly well researched books it's based on. At best "The Last Kingdom" is a solid drama with some fun action, at worst frustratingly bad because you know it can be really good at times. A bonus point goes for casting actual Scandinavians as 95% of the viking characters.
- DirectorPeter MadsenJeffrey J. VarabStarsDick KaysøPreben KristensenLaura BroThrough Loki's treachery, two children in the Viking age find themselves spirited away into the world of Norse Mythology.A great Danish film about the adventures of two children as they enter the service of the thunder god Thor. With nice, traditional animation and an amazing score, "Valhalla" is based on the equally amazing comic books. It's probably the most faithful adaptation of Norse mythology ever put on film. Recommended.
- DirectorHoward McCainStarsJim CaviezelSophia MylesRon PerlmanDuring the reign of the Vikings, Kainan, a man from a far-off world, crash lands on Earth, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry. Not an amazing film, but pretty entertaining. Suprisingly accurate considering the kind of film it is. Not a bad film to watch to relax after work. Loosely based on Beowulf
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsRay WinstoneCrispin GloverAngelina JolieThe warrior Beowulf must fight and defeat the monster Grendel, who is terrorizing Denmark, then Grendel's Mother, who begins killing out of revenge.A really ugly and loud film. Althrough it follows the poem to a certain degree, it fails being engading is way too over the top. It's subversions of the Beowulf story falls really flat. Not recommened, but some of the music is great.
- DirectorSturla GunnarssonStarsHringur IngvarssonSpencer WildingStellan SkarsgårdIn Denmark, during the 6th century, Danish king Hrothgar and his warriors kill a troll whose son, Grendel, vows revenge.Another Beowulf, this time with Iceland standing in for Denmark and Götaland (wait what?). Jokes aside, certainly a unique in it's take on Beowulf. As far as costumes go, it's actually very accurate to the Vendel age (the time before the viking age) and is a pretty interesting story. Gerad Butler is certainly in his right element as a viking. The problem is that (like 2007 Beowulf), all the famous film adaptations of Beowulf are subversions or reimagenings of the story. Most people are not that familiar with the epic poem (I can recommend Julian Glover's amazing recording for those who want to explore it). Therefore, any subversion falls a bit flat as the trope is unbuilt.
- DirectorViking AlmquistStarsKarin EngmanEliza SicaSofia EkholmA shaman is sent on a manhunt for her outlaw sister.
- DirectorJohnny BarringtonStarsJean-Marc ChautemsEileen DunwoodieGísli Örn GarðarssonA tribe of Norse warriors traipse across a barren land after battle. Bloodied and wounded, their chief is near death. He is about to hand over power to his son when an army of a completely different kind descends upon them. Can't recommend this enough. Just watch it.
- DirectorAndrey KravchukStarsDanila KozlovskiySvetlana KhodchenkovaMaksim SukhanovKievan Rus, late 10th century. After the death of his father, the young Viking prince Vladimir of Novgorod is forced into exile across the frozen sea.I have yet to see this film, but the trailer has some great imagery. Looks slightly more historicly accurate than the average viking film. One of the only films to deal with the Norsemen in what was to be Russia.
- DirectorArne MattssonStarsCarl-Gustaf LindstedtDirch PasserÅke SöderblomThe viking chief Hjorvard has two wild sons, Glum and Garm, both notorious berserkers.Althrough the vikings deserved this treatment for all they did, we as an audience do not. DO NOT WATCH!
- DirectorAntony SmithStarsSol HerasDouglas RussellAmber Jean RowanIn Dark Ages Britain, a group of young Saxons are captured by a clan of fearsome Viking warriors and used as prey in a ritualistic manhunt.Very lousy film, with the exception of a pretty good scene involving a black metal-esque völva (shaman). Not recommended.

- DirectorStefan FjeldmarkJesper MøllerStarsRoger CarelLorànt DeutschSara ForestierWhile tutoring the Gallic chief Vitalstatistix's rebellious nephew Justforkix, Asterix and Obelix must rescue him from Vikings who wish to learn the meaning of fear to become invincible.Based on a pretty funny entry in "Asterix the gaul", but I have not seen this.
- DirectorJack CardiffStarsRichard WidmarkSidney PoitierRuss TamblynA vagabond Viking adventurer and a Moor both compete to find "The Mother of All Voices", a legendary golden bell near the Pillars of Hercules.Loosely based on a classic Swedish novel. I have not seen this.
- DirectorMichael HerbigStarsJonas HämmerleWaldemar KobusGünther KaufmannThe story of a young Viking boy who accompanies his father, the chief of their village, and his men on their adventures--and often is the person who uses his wit and instincts to help the men in their times of need.German adaptation of another Swedish classic, as the Swedes do not seem to be able to adapt their own books.
- DirectorChristian DitterStarsJonas HämmerleValeria EisenbartWaldemar KobusViking village Flake's chief Halvar orders clever, tiny son Wickie to rob a knights convoy. The warriors must take over but fail to see Wickie being abducted with a cargo of Eskimo slaves who also carry a mysterious manuscript on the eternal ice palace containing the Norse gods' treasure. Wickie escapes, and the thief who refuses to help him comes along as stowaway. Wickie works out the manuscript, but before the men can sail, they are drugged and Halvar is abducted. Chieftaincy now falls by customary law to Wickie, who needs to grow on the job in several senses.Another german adaptation.
