The best true vampire movies - as opposed to Twilight, Blade etc.

Starring Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen when they were great actors, one year after tt0090605/combined had kicked their asses. Paxton as a havoc-wreaker vampire rocker, Henriksen really scary, James LeGros and Theresa Randle unrecognizably unknown, plus a small fang family for which "disfunctional" is an outrageous understatement (like calling Hitler naughty) – all these in a part vampire, part modern western, part road movie film where the word “vampire” is never even mentioned once.

Nicolas Cage in his favorite kind of character, i.e. a very, very sick person that follows his craziness to the end, no matter what. One of the movies with a great twist in the end and with Maria Conchita Alonso in her best and funniest role ever, as a housemaid terrorized by her evil demented boss.

Tarantino himself as a psycho murderer, Harvey Keitel as an unfrocked priest, Salma Hayek as a more than exotic dancer, George Clooney as the toughest badass of the ‘90s, who would make Dirty Harry look like Gandhi. Also, two completely different movies (a crime story and an unexpected supernatural incursion) in one, a formula whose reasons still elude me, but the best bet would be QT wanted the bad guys to suddenly become good guys. Film in film, biography, history of the moving pictures, the grandfather of all vampires, movie about the making of the classic Nosferatu, in the ’20s – boring? Think again! Willem Dafoe as Max Schreck as Orlock and one of the most twisted situation twists in cinema.

British series about a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost who won’t accept their conditions and try to live on as normal people. The girl haunts houses, the pretty boy bites citizen neck, the goofy guy turns into a horrible monster at night – then they go home and cook pancakes! The idea sounds like the usual cheap, commercial film like tt0370263/combined or maybe Transformers Vs Robin Hood, born out of lack of good ideas – still the series are unexpectedly good, very well written and, very important, it’s all in the script and less in the SFX, not because of the presumably smaller budget, but due to good writing.

Could have been run of the mill – but luckily there were the veteran director Neil Jordan and great actors like Cruise, Pitt, Banderas, Slater, Marcel Iures, and the incredible Kirsten Dunst. Personally, I think it’s one of those rare cases of movies that are better than the book that had inspired them.
