In his wanderlust, Joe Cullen moves from the US to South America to work in a mining camp, he leaving behind his wife Julie and their infant daughter, Ellen Mary. After Joe stops writing and sending money, Julie, not expecting Joe ever to return to her in he being dissatisfied with married life, files for divorce, and moves with Ellen Mary to the town of Howard to start life anew working in the payroll department of Howard Factory. Among the people she meets and befriends in Howard is coworker Frank Richards, the friendship with him which slowly but eventually blossoms into romance. Despite some opposition from his parents, especially his father, Frank and Julie get married, Frank, in the process, becoming the only father that Ellen Mary has really ever known, a loving one at that. After Julie and Frank have a child of their own, William so named after his father, Joe, four years after his departure, returns solely wanting to reestablish a relationship of sorts with now adolescent Ellen Mary. After Joe sees Julie's new life, he changes his want from that relationship with Ellen Mary to suing for full custody. The sole issue, originally with William's Sr.'s objection to the marriage, and to Joe's want for full custody, is that Julie and Joe, and thus by association Ellen Mary, are white, while Frank is black.

The action takes place in occupied Czechoslovak Republic after assassination of Schutzstaffel (SS)-Obergruppenführer and General der Polizei Reinhard Heydrich, acting Reichsprotektor of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia In Prague on 27 May 1942. Jirka is the boy whose family was murdered in the village of Lidice as repercussions for the assassination of Heydrich. He stays with his uncle - engineer Petr Lom. Marta - a young girl leaving next door, working at the post office helps to take care of the boy. Lom has just started working on the military airport, governed by Sudeten-Nazi named Ullman. Resistance is quite active in the airport, collecting arms and grenades and communicating with allies, sometimes doing some small diversion. They have a lot of great intel thanks to secretary Jana Tomesowa, who is trustee of Ullman and has access to a lot of restricted informations. Jirka also starts to help at the airport, but he's filled with sorrow and need of revenge. He's caught stealing grenade and arrested by gestapo. Later he's shot. When Jana sees it she faints, and Ullman finds some secret message she had with her. He tells he has found something to his gestapo friends and goes to the warehouse to investigate it himself. In there he's killed by resistance, by being pushed onto transformer. Gestapo starts arresting and searching houses of airport workers, and it turns out that Marta is working with Germans as informer. Lom doesn't know that yet, he's struck by Jirkas death. He picks the gun from his hideout and walks back to the airport. The neighbours tell him truth about Marta. Lom kills her and helps Jana escape. Germans gather airport workers and threaten to kill them all if noone says who killed Ullman. Then Lom appears saying he did it and killing men from gestapo who killed Jirka. He's killed by the soldiers. Workers go back to work. In last scene, dying Lom has vision of the future. He sees woman with gun (symbolizing Chechoslovakia) going forward with war attrocities around her. However she doesn't stop until the war is over and Czechoslovak flag appears on mast.

The young, sickly girl Bernadette comes from a poverty-stricken family. When the Virgin Mary appears to her in a cavern near Lourdes, no one takes the girl seriously, even when she digs up a wellspring at the Virgin's instructions The local authorities even try to hush up the entire incident. In vain, however, because when Empress Eugénie requests water from the spring for her sickly son, they are forced to acquiesce. And even the local priest is finally convinced. While taking his tuberculosis-stricken fiancé Claire to a sanatorium, the young doctor Henri Guillaumet meets Bernadette. The water from Lourdes' spring heals Claire's disease overnight, but the scientist in Henri doubts the miracle and wants to expose Bernadette as a liar. It is not until Henri again meets Bernadette, who has in the meantime become a nun and works as a nurse, that he finds a way to balance belief and modern science. And his love for Claire is strengthened as well.

In 1857, an unemployed miller moves his family into grim lodgings; his wife takes in laundry. In February of 1858, at the Massabielle grotto, their 14-year old asthmatic, illiterate daughter, Bernadette, sees a light she later distinguishes as a beautiful young woman. The girl converses with the woman over the next few months. Crowds follow her and people are cured by the waters from a spring Bernadette has cleared. Secular authorities are threatened by the popular gatherings and subject the girl to police inquiry and medical review. The local monsignor is also skeptical, then becomes Bernadette's champion. She maintains her forthright simplicity and untutored wisdom throughout.

Bernadette knows she's been chosen to be the Bride of the Lord.
