The original story was written to take place at night, but due to budget constraints and cold weather, the script was adapted to be filmed during the day. Director/writer André Pretorius insisted on shooting at night, because an empty, quiet city is essential for the story. The script was reverted back to a night setting, and was shot in three nights in the middle of winter.
