The latest TV show from "Mr Beast" is another example of the increasing superficiality and staging in entertainment television. A series of scripted games whose outcome comes as no surprise. The participants don't seem authentic and "Mr Beast" himself is once again clearly trying to make a big event out of little substance. The problem with this is that a big prize alone does not make a big show. But the hype will do the trick and this format will of course also be a success, because there are more than enough people who allow themselves to be controlled by others and bow their heads in obeisance.
The show is a prime example of the flattening of the television programme, in which quantity triumphs over quality. The supposedly spontaneous reactions of the candidates seem rehearsed and artificial, which nips any tension in the bud. The games themselves are mediocre at best and offer no intellectual challenge for viewers.
The lack of depth in the interpersonal interactions is particularly disappointing. Instead of showing real emotions and personalities, the show presents a series of stereotypes that are obviously designed to appeal to the widest possible audience. This alienates the viewer from the participants and makes it difficult to develop genuine sympathy or antipathy.
Although the technical realisation of the show is highly polished, it cannot hide the lack of substance. Exaggerated sound effects and hectic camera work try in vain to create tension where there is none. In the end, what remains is the bland aftertaste of a missed opportunity to produce truly entertaining and sophisticated television.
Conclusion: A disappointing show that promises more than it can deliver and underestimates the intelligence of its viewers. Anyone looking for real entertainment would be better off leaving their television switched off.
