While the opening credits say "based on true events", Thayer did not exist. Writer and director Regina Crosby based Teenage Dirtbag on her experience in high school, Coeur d'Alene (where the high school scenes were actually filmed), and not on any one instance. Of the movie, Crosby said "It definitely talks about the pain you go through in growing up," She said. "You have a lot of regrets that you take into adulthood from high school, and you almost never get the opportunity to make corrections on those regrets or reach out to somebody you didn't reach out to at the time."

Blooper
In Study Hall Thayer shows Amber a huge scar on his stomach. In a later scene without his shirt on, the scar isn't there.

Teenage Dirtbag

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen maybe the best so far. Its got just the right amount of tears and laughter. Its shocking and depressing. But its so amazing and proves a point. "death is fleeting..love lasts forever." STATEMENT. Teens have this thing where if they stay in their social group that they are just dandy. But going out and about from your social group brings many other things to your life that you never knew you'd actually wanna know. if i was in their situation i would of been just as shocked as amber was. Both Amber Lang and Thayer are awesome characters. I do believe this is one of he best movies I've ever seen in my whole life.
