Lucas, a boy of school age lives in the suburbs of a small town in Buenos Aires Province with his single mother and his younger siblings. The house is little more than a shack and lacks electricity and indoor plumbing. He frequently has do chores at home to help his mother. His passport to freedom is an old, rickety bicycle on which he roams the town and meets his friends. The white smock of Argentinian schools minimizes the difference between his attire and that of his wealthier schoolmates. He is a bright kind, fond of reading and is regularly encouraged by his teacher.
Hanna is German, in her seventies and lives alone in a well appointed if somewhat neglected house in town. Her father was a sports hero (glider pilot?) in the Third Reich. She is not popular among the locals. We see Hanna watching. TV tapes (in German) presumable taken from wartime German newsreels.
In Argentina, mandado means buying and delivering groceries or household items to another person, usually for a tip. Lucas, who badly needs pocket money agrees to do this service for Anna. He spends time in Anna's house fascinated by her books. Some are in Spanish and are clearly objectionable celebrations of the Third Reich. He has no frame of reference to judge and his readings put him in conflict with the teachings at school.
This is it. There is no much of a plot. What the movie (directed by Fabio Junco and Julio Midú) does to perfection is to present two characters, Lucas and Hanna gradually sculpted with deft, subtle touches, sometimes just looks and gestures. Cinematography lends enchantment to squalid interiors and music issparingly used. A movie that does its job well.
