Recensione in evidenza
YA O YA BEN has a predictable family-related plot with the male central character (Ayhan Işık) and his spouse (Pervin Par) falling out with one another over a domestic affair. In revenge he decides to ruin his father-in-law, and nearly does so until the final reel, when the father-in-law's living-room is about to be emptied of furniture. With the family almost in tears around him, Işık asks the father-in-law to sign a paper passing control of the estate over to the younger man. The father-in-law complies, and the family lives happily ever after, but there is still time for the spouse to continue objecting to Işık's attitude; he responds by carrying her forcibly over his shoulder outside to a waiting Land-Rover. The film ends with the two of them embracing with a view of the İstanbul cityscape in the background. Aydın Arakon's film is full of familiar Yeşilçam tropes - a repeated sequence of shot/reverse shots, interspersed with stock footage of local areas. The snatches of (uncopyrighted) music include pieces of "Romeo and Juliet" by Tchaikovsky, Fifties middle-of-the-road tunes, Sinatra's "Love and Marriage" and others. The continuity is jerky, with the music abruptly curtailed on occasions, suggesting that the film was thrown together in a short time (it most likely was). But the story is a full-blooded experience for anyone interested in the Yeşilçam genre.
