Based on an arresting true story, The Captain follows an enigmatic German army deserter, Willi Herold (Max Hubacher), after he stumbles across an abandoned Nazi captains uniform in the final weeks of World War II. Newly emboldened by the allure of a suit he stole only to stay warm, Herold discovers that many Germans will follow the leader, whomever that happens to be. A parade of fresh atrocities follows in the self-declared captains wake, serving as a reminder of the consequences of social conformity and untrammeled political power. Simultaneously a historical docudrama and sociological examination with undertones of ghoulish absurdity,The Captain presents fascism as a system to be gamed by those most casuistic and unscrupulous.

On Herold's original uniform, he has the Luftwaffe paratrooper badge and the Ground Assault Badge of the Luftwaffe.

The captain's uniform he later dons has the Narvik Shield and the Kreta (Crete) cuff title on the left arm, the Iron Cross 1st class on the left pocket top, the Luftwaffe Paratrooper Badge, Wound Badge, and the Army General Assault Badge. The Iron Cross 2nd Class ribbon is also worn to right of the left pocket.

The Narvik shield and Kreta cuff title indicate that the wearer served in these two important campaigns in Norway, 1941 and Crete, 1941 respectively.

Blooper
Some German soldiers have a skull painted on their helmet. This specific type of skull decal was used by a Finnish army unit (1st battalion, infantry regiment 46) in the continuation war 1941-1944. A famous colorized photo of three Finnish soldiers in a trench wearing this sort helmet decal of is often incorrectly associated with Germans or the SS.

Surprisingly good and different than other WWII movies

This title is not like any other typical WWII film. There are no epic battles to witness and no glory for the viewer to hope for. Instead, the film takes a dark humanistic approach to explore the dynamics of power and authority. The quote "Power attracts the worst and worst, it corrupts the best" comes to mind when watching events unfold through many dialogue intensive scenes of the film. Others may see the movie dragging because of all the dialogue but for me, it's a chance to explore in depth the characters and their realistic reaction/behavior in the story. Although certain points of the plot can seem over dramatize which reminds me that the notion of this being based on a true story should be taken with a grain of salt. But overall, it feels authentic for the most part and it's refreshing.
