A popular singer in China before starting in movies, Li had several
notable performances in films, including a highly acclaimed performance
in the title role of Qiu Jin (1984), which earned her a Best Actress
nomination. She seemed on the verge of stardom in the mid-1980s, when
she abruptly retired from filmmaking to resume her musical
career.
