'Das beste Stück' is your usual early 00s raunchy romentic comedy except for one little thing.
It starts in medias res, in an action scene, the between-the-sheets kind. He seems to be giving it his all while she seems rather bored and frustrated, then at one point asking him to 'get in' finally, when he, in fact, has been 'all in' the whole time!
The next day, he try make up for it, so he surprises her during the day, turns out she had cheated on him with a guy who's the opposite in that department.
So he broke up with her and gave up on women forever. - or so he thought. Then one day, our hero literally saved a woman's life.
Now, here come the complications. She's really into him and wants that too, but our hero is so self-conscious about his tiny problem that he tries to put it off for as long as he can, while her frustration and suspicion grow with each date.
As expected, our hero turns the compensation up to the max, everything from shady support groups to ridiculous size-increasing methods. Anything to avoid explaining himself to her!
It's a boy-meets-girl story with a small twist. It's rare to see an unequipped (handsome) male protagonist for sure, its refreshing. No idealization here at all though, the film sets him in a grounded world, much like ours, where people say 'that' doesn't matter but sure it does.
The female protagonist's best friend illustrates this contradiction well. On one hand, she does the 'size doesn't matter' speech and criticizes men for thinking women only care about the big ones, yet she and others can't help laughing and taking shots at men who are presumably undersized. Just like in real life.
It's German, and it's cheesy and cringe at times, with an expected conclusion, but surprisingly realistic in some regard and kinda relatable. Our hero is mocked and ridiculed throughout the whole film for his shortcoming, it makes you feel better it isn't you.
Despite all, I rate it a 4/10, its below average where it counts so its couldn't penetrate deep enough to reach its potential.
