James Cagney had been advised by his doctors and caregivers that making a film at this point in his life was very important for his health. The actor never flew, so he and his wife took an ocean liner to London, where his scenes were filmed. Despite his numerous infirmities, he stayed on-set during his fellow actors' closeups to give them line readings.

Charles W. Fairbanks was not Vice President when he ran with Theodore Roosevelt in 1904. He was a Senator from Indiana, chosen as Roosevelt's running mate that year. Roosevelt was William McKinley's Vice President; he became president when McKinley was assassinated, and had no Vice President for his first term.

Just a quick note for now -- Ragtime is not set in the 30s or the 20s ...

But rather at the turn of the Century, in the 'ought years. That is not a quibble, since a good part of the interest of this movie is based upon its serving as a fairly rare window into life in that period. Whereas, there are skads of movies set in the 30's, and a fair number set in the 20s (in addition to the silents of that era), as the plot summary and some user comments erroneously have the movie era.

Stanford White, America's greatest architect and one of New York's leading figures at the time, was murdered in 1906 -- which is of course the beginning date of this movie. It ends with war being declared as announced by a newspaper headline -- WWI of course. Which marked the end of the era.
