Sweetheart

The story pays tribute to Lady Macbeth from Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' throughout the film. There is the re-occurrence of her bloody face and blood on her hands after the death of her father, which only she can see. Also, the series of nightmares and dream sequences that she can't separate from reality ultimately leading to her insanity. Lady Macbeth is never referred to by her first name but only by her state of marriage with her husband, just as Sweetheart is never referred to by her real name only the nickname the men in her life have given her.
