Contrary to seemingly obvious belief, Hans Van Harken is not actually Dutch. In fact, he's a mixture of Spanish, Mexican, Irish, Caribbean, and varied Mediterranean. His Jewish grandfather was adopted by a Dutch Catholic family in New York city and inherited their name. His mother named him Hans after Hans Christian Anderson and so that his initials would be the symmetrical 'HVH'.
