For about two years in late 1970s, he played "Grimsley", a ghoul-like figure who
hosted Saturday night horror movies on Channel 9 (then KHJ-TV) in Los Angeles. During commercial breaks, Grimsley would
make fun of the movies. This was easy, since
most of the movies were low-budget. He became popular enough to make
appearances at local sci-fi/horror conventions and Magic Mountain, a theme park north of Los Angeles. A
line of Grimsley T-shirts also appeared. A few years later "Elvira, Mistress of the
Dark", aka
Cassandra Peterson, came on the air and did the same thing.
