German character actor, on stage in Berlin from 1947. Successful during the 1950's in Düsseldorf Theatre under the direction of Gustaf Gründgens. From 1976 to 1987, ensemble member of the Bavarian State Theatre. Popular in films and TV, especially during the 1960's and 70's. Lean, balding and with a prominent scar on his cheek, he excelled at playing damaged people: cynics, cowards, introverts, self haters and the like.
