Prolific comic supporting actor, who specialised in hayseeds, fast-talking reporters and radio broadcasters, doctors and clerks. After years of cameos and bit parts in movies, he finally got his break with meatier roles in early television, notably as the ever-vague Professor Pepperwinkle in Adventures of Superman (1952).
