Corpulent general purpose actor of the 1930's, 40's and 50's. The son of a chemist, he was trained by Max Reinhardt and made his theatrical debut in 1920. Primarily a stage actor and director, he worked regularly in Berlin theatre and cabaret, sidelining in films as working class types, small-time crooks or affable innkeepers.
