His theatre credits include: Brutus in "Julius Caesar" by William Shakespeare , directed by Michael Benthall (Old Vic Theatre, London, 1955); Antipa Ivanich Zykov in the play "Zykovs" by Maxim Gorky (1976, Aldwych Theatre, London).
He was awarded the 1982 Critics Circle Theatre Awards (Drama Theatre
Award) for Best Supporting Actor of 1981 for his performances in A Kind
of Alaska and The Importance of Being Earnest.
To me, every part is a character part. That is not to say that I think every actor ought to be able to play anything. He must of course realise his limitations and be extremely humble about them. But it is fatal to allow himself to be tied to one particular type of part.
