Ubiquitous, silver-haired 1930s and 1940s US character actor with well-modulated voice, usually given roles involving authority or authoritative figures: judges, lawyers, doctors, high-ranking government officials or military officers and the like. Very prolific, in 1940 alone he appeared in 20 films.
