John David Washington must keep a robot kid alive in 'The Creator' (2023), a new sci-fi epic from Gareth Edwards, director of 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' (2016). Washington plays Joshua, an ex-special forces agent fighting a futuristic war between humans and artificial intelligence. After his wife disappears, Joshua is recruited to destroy the robots' secret weapon that could end the world, but instead he discovers their weapon is a cybernetic child named Alphie, played by newcomer Madeline Yuna Voyles. The Creator's creator, filmmaker Gareth Edwards reteams with Rogue One writer Chris Weitz and his Godzilla star Ken Watanabe for an original story that supposedly "makes 'Blade Runner' (1982) look like child's play," according to one journalist at the 2023 CinemaCon sneak peek. If you repli-can't believe the hype about Industrial Light & Magic's eye-popping visual effects, Edwards also enlists Allison Janney ('I, Tonya'), Gemma Chan ('Crazy Rich Asians'), and Ralph Ineson ('The Green Knight') in his future war that is slated for September 2023.
