Today I had a chance to see an early screening of the new horror film, Huggin Molly, written and directed by Connor Flynn. This movie, which will be released to the public for streaming on YouTube next week, centers around Benny as he travels to the small town of Abbeville, AL to look for his sister who has gone missing. Soon after arriving in town, Benny learns about the legend of Huggin Molly and joins forces with aspiring student film maker, Roberto, to both find Benny's sister, but also uncover the truth behind the legend.
After watching this film, I decided to do a little research and found out that Huggin Molly is a real legend in the town of Abbeville, AL. Legend has it that if she catches you out and about after dark, that she will wrap you up in a hug and scream in your ear. This low budget found footage film has its fair share of flaws. For one, the audio is shotty at times and the dialogue itself did not flow very well. The acting performances are not great, and yet, I could not keep my eyes off the screen. Connor Flynn did a really good job of creating a story inspired by real-life folklore that is captivating, compelling, and even pretty scary at times. I more than once jumped when Huggin Molly came on the screen, and I thought that it was a really cool idea to show various real-life depictions of Huggin Molly during the end credits, along with playing 911 audio clips while the credits rolled which I found especially chilling.
Huggin Molly will be released for streaming on YouTube just in time for Halloween with hopes to stream on Tubi and I recommend adding this one to your spooky season playlist. With only 54 mins of total runtime, the story gets going immediately and does a good job of keeping the viewer engaged.
