Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony is a feature length documentary film that explores the cultural phenomenon of Bronies: a group of mostly young adult men who are dedicated fans of the animated series, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

One would be hard-pressed to find a cultural sensation as unique and as unexpected as Bronies. Why are these guys attracted to a cartoon intended for little girls? And why are they willing to brave societyÂ’s ridicule for their love of the show?

The documentary discovers that the essential story elements of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic -- Honesty, Kindness, Laughter, Generosity, Loyalty and Magic Â– have a universality that extends beyond age and gender and that Bronies are pushing the boundaries of what society deems appropriate in their quest for a kinder, gentler future.

The film chronicles Bronies from around the world, each with their unique story, as they make their way to My Little Pony conventions in Germany, England and, the biggest of all, BronyCon in the USA.

The revelations in the film are, indeed, unexpected and give hope to the notion that these Bronies might be on to something quite wonderful.

The multi-week fund raising campaign exceeded its initial fund raising goal of $60,000 in three days and ultimately earned $322,022 in pledges, not counting the concurrent contributions made through PayPal at the end of its run in June 10, 2012.

Gaffes
When a clip of My Little Pony Tales (1992) is shown, it is identified as "Generation 2", even though it was still technically part of Generation 1, on the late end. "G2" refers to a line of toys that had no direct media tie-in.

More Propaganda than Documentary

This film presents itself as a documentary, but it is more of a one-sided fluff-piece that celebrates Bronyism as purely magic, devoid of discord.

Notably missing from this fluff is the more provocative, dark side of adult MLP worship. Sure, one could technically divide MLP adult fans up into two separate categories, but this misses the point. Bronies misses the opportunity to present this odd realm of adult fandom in all of its dimensions, so is shallow and boring.

The film avoids the truth in favor of the magical, and as such seems more childlike than MLP itself.
