Mark Ruffalo had a lot of doubts about his performance during the shoot. He often half-joked that his friend Oscar Isaac, who was filming on a nearby sound stage, was going to be called in to replace him. One day, Willem Dafoe pranked Ruffalo by taking him to a room where Isaac (who was in on the joke) was waiting. Isaac and Dafoe informed Ruffalo he was fired and, indeed, getting replaced by Isaac.

Gaffes
Mark Ruffalo's attempt at a British accent is extremely unconvincing.

However, an unconvincing accent is simply a limitation of the actor's ability and not a mistake on the part of the filmmakers. Also, what is considered unconvincing is a subjective matter of opinion.

Versions alternatives
The UK's BBFC viewed the film during editing to provide advice on classification, and informed the distributor it required changes to one short sequence to secure an "18" rating. The scene depicted sexual activity in the presence of children. Under UK law, this could be illegal and therefore required removal before being distributed within the country. The changes were made before formal classification, and this same version of the film was ultimately released everywhere.

Shades of The Island of Dr. Moreau, Videodrome & Wild at heart

The right story for apparently the right director (haven't seen one of his films before) and the right fully committed cast of characters.

Brilliant cinematography, loved the way it moved from the morose black and white taint of the doctor's home into the burst of colors and images of the outside wolrd as the adventure unfolds. Costume designs were outrageously fantastic.

The players let it all hang loose in their performaces. You could could tell they truly loved the freedom of expression that they were able to bring to what these characters called for.

Completely over the top, mind boggling romp through the imagination of the main character on a journey of self-discovery and a relentless degree of self-indulgence.

I don't know if Willem Dafoe finds these roles or if these roles find Willem Defoe, but am I glad that I live in a time that allows me to see him perform.
