Commentaire à la une
It is difficult to find a single quality in this movie, that can be defined as mediocre only for respect to some actorial interpretations (above all G. Lavia, one great Italian theater-actor, playing Brabantio): otherwise, it could be brutally forgotten, probably even unworthy of any review. I was curios about the idea of transposing Shakespeare's tragedy in our times, and, as an Italian cinema-goer, even more curious. I had clear in mind the wonderful example of Romeo+Juliet, and even though I didn't expect the same quality, I had positive expectations: that's why the disappointment was still greater. The final result is an immature, kitsch, besides vulgar, product, totally lacking the profundity and complexity of Shakespeare's work, as far as both plot and characters are concerned. Defined as a "college movie", it is nothing more than an embarrassing reduction to 100 minutes of banalities, aimed at attracting an audience of young people, maybe teenagers, who, I believe, deserve better means of approach to drama and more serious thought-provoking stimuli. The actors playing the main roles (Othello, Desdemona and Iago) do not help raising the movie from the emotional flatness and emptiness which distinguish it from the beginning to the end.
