- AnecdotesThe monsters shown in the movie are all references to original monsters in movies. Ginormica is a reference to L'attaque de la femme de 50 pieds (1958), B.O.B. is a reference to Danger planétaire (1958), The Missing Link is a reference to L'Étrange Créature du lac noir (1954), Dr. Cockroach Ph.D. is a reference to La Mouche noire (1958), and Insectosaurus is a reference to Mothra from Mosura (1961).
- GaffesWhen Ginormica goes to the TV station to see Derek the call letters on the building begin with a W. All broadcast stations east of the MS river start with a W. West of the MS river they all begin with K.
- Citations
Dr. Cockroach Ph.D.: Might we ask for your name, madam?
Susan Murphy: Susan.
B.O.B.: No, we mean like your monster name. You know, what do people scream when they see you coming? Like "Look out! Here comes...?"
Susan Murphy: Susan.
Dr. Cockroach Ph.D.: Really?
B.O.B.: [spookily] SUUUUSSAAANN! Ooh, I just scared myself! That is scary!
- Crédits fousThe DreamWorks logo appears in black and white, and the boy on the moon is abducted by a tractor beam from a flying saucer hovering over. Afterwards, it burns up like an old film, segueing into the opening scene. The saucer is from the movie "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers."
- Versions alternativesThe film has a localized version in Australia where the News Reporter is not voiced by Ed Helms but instead by David Koch, a co-presenter of the morning show Sunrise (2000) seen on Channel 7 Australia-wide.

What I got was a mildly good movie. I mean, there were some nice gags in the Strangelove- lite War Room, and some great lines from BOB, but it really left me wanting more. As a whole, the film never got to the comical heights of Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, or even Shrek 2. There are times in the movie where you know that they are going completely random to try and get some laughs, but fail pretty badly.
Besides comedy, the story itself is pretty predictable. From the moment you meet the monsters you know what the moral of the story, and you know pretty much how the whole film will play out.
But it is not a bad film. Not at all. It's good, but not great. What IS great is the 3D. Me, I've never really warmed to 3D, but they use it here in a completely different sense. Monster's vs Alien's 3D is not about shouting "OMG I CAN TOUCH HIS BEARD!!", but more about perspective. And hair. I'm sorry but it's worth seeing just for Ginormica's (Susan's) hair alone.
So basically, it's fun - but not as fun as it should have been. And take it from me: even if you're cynical about 3D; see it in 3D. It's worth the ticket price alone.
