Anecdotes
Some scenes were filmed on Robert Duvall's estate in Virginia, which was the site of some Civil War skirmishes.

Gaffes
Robert Edward Lee and Thomas Jonathan Jackson are shown wearing full beards at the very start of the Civil War, but they did not look like this until sometime later. Lee had dark hair going gray and wore a drooping mustache of the type favored by army officers in the 1850s. He grew his well known beard while serving as Jefferson Davis's military advisor. Jackson was clean shaven and grew a beard later out of his well known disinterest in personal grooming and appearance.

It is the systematic coercion of one group of men over another. It has been around since the book of Genesis. It exists in every corner of the world, but that is no excuse for us to tolerate it here when we find it right infront of our very eyes in our own country. As God as my witness, there is no one I hold in my heart dearer than you. But if your life, or mine,is part of the price to end this curse and free the Negro, then let God's work be done.

Versions alternatives
The Director's Cut of the film includes additional action scenes from the Battle of Antietam. The battle scenes are shown from the perspectives of Jackson and Chamberlain, and mostly focus on the fighting in Miller's Cornfield which was a major deciding point of the battle.

A Great History Film

I am amazed at some of the comments regarding this extraordinary film. As a person interested in 19th century US history I was more than rewarded by watching this film. I confess to having tears in my eyes after both viewings (and shall certainly watch it on DVD again. Is it as much fun as "Spiderman"? No. But neither was the War Between the States. The offense some commentators take to the articulate speech of 19th century men and women is deplorable. Yes, children, people did quote Scripture and Shakespeare and the classics. The tragedy is that today so few do. We live in more barbarous times than did Jackson, Lee and Chamberlain. I applaud the use of quotations from letters and recorded speeches, as well as the more balanced historical approach to "the war of northern aggression". As I wrote in commentary on "Robin and Marian", that movie was laudable because the script did not portray 12th century people as thought they were 20th century people read back in time. The same is true of "Gods and Generals": these are 19th century people portrayed as 19th century people. Not mere entertainment but an extraordinary triumph of honest historical portrayal.
