Unsure of its own premises, THE IMPOSTER is a lame attempt at a softcore porn comedy, misleadingly reissued by Something Weird on Vol. 47 of its XXX Dragon Art Theatre series. Gimmick is a guy posing as a shrink, who has sex with his patients.
They comment on how different he looks (duh!), but the same actor (John Keith) appears as the REAL shrink at film's end. Movie is strictly filler, so there is no attempt whatsoever at credibility.
Though the hack who writes liner notes for the back of the DVD-R touts this one, perhaps as a result of brain damage, it is rather difficult to endure such poorly shot simulated sex scenes, in which there is no danger of a penis ever finding its desired destination. Cast has trouble with their improvised dialog, and a dream sequence of one patient, Kathy Morgan, raped by a guy in a gorilla suit with a long appendage attached is neither funny or erotic. Kathy also tells the fake doc about her dreams of sex with her stepfather -we see it acted out, and doc advises her to do it for real.
In the lead role Keith does his usual comedy routine which was a lot more fun in THE PIGKEEPER'S DAUGHTER and even a hardcore outing BRIDE'S DELIGHT. He also co-starred in a classic Harry Novak short film (not listed in IMDb): THE PEEPER.
Garage band musical score includes a rendition of "Summertime Blues". Photography is extremely poor, with the anonymous director reverting to a fast in & out zoom lens effect at times, merely to annoy the audience. Shredded print has an idiotic, rushed anyway finale, in which it is revealed that our hero is, indeed, an imposter, but his receptionist's big buildup revelation is garbled and unintelligible, leaving the poor viewer with a WTF? frustration.
